Marshall Wisconsin Odds, Spread, Predictions & College Football Picks

The Marshall Thundering Herd head to Madison to take on the 11th ranked Wisconsin Badgers Saturday, September 6th at 12:00 EST. There is no Chad Pennington, Randy Moss, or Byron Leftwich on the Marshall roster anymore so the books have Wisconsin as a fairly heavy favorite. Bookmaker Sportsbook has the Herd listed as a +21 underdog for Saturday’s game. Jimmy Boyd’s Marshall/Wisconsin college football betting preview will help you better handicap this matchup.

P.J. Hill ran all over Akron last week, gaining 210 yards on the way to a 38-17 win. Hill has already joined some elite company at Wisconsin, joining Ron Dayne and Anthony Davis as the only two other backs to rush for more than 1,200 yards in each of their first two seasons. If last week was any indicator, Hill will destroy that number this season. And I can’t give all of the credit to Hill as he has the luxury of running behind five returning starters on the offensive line.

Wisconsin is known for its physical smash-mouth football and you can expect no different from them this week. They love to grind it out 3 yards at a time, controlling the ball and the clock, to wear out the defense and to dictate the tempo of the game.

The running game will especially look like an attractive option this season as the Badgers have a new QB under center in Allan Evridge. He was 7-for-10 in the opener with 75 yards and a touchdown, but he was intercepted once deep in Akron territory. Teams are going to try to make Evridge beat them, but smaller schools like Marshall could still struggle to execute that game plan because of how big and physical Wisconsin is. We would normally expect to see a bit larger spread with an 11th ranked team from the Big Ten taking on a team picked to finish near the bottom of the Conference USA East division, but because Wisconsin keeps the clock moving with its running game, odds makers adjust accordingly. If you like Wisconsin to cover the spread, you can bet them at -20.5 at JustBet Sportsbook.

Don’t expect Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema to take the Herd lightly. As K-State’s defensive coordinator, he watched the then sixth-ranked Wildcats fall 27-20 in Manhattan in 2003.

Marshall will no doubt be looking to take a Bielema team out behind the wood shed again following a 35-10 win over Illinois State last Saturday. Darius Marshall rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown as the Herd totaled 229 yards on the ground and averaged over 7 a carry.  While Marshall is a heavy underdog, Wisconsin’s methodical style of play gives teams chances to stick around and that’s all the Herd will be hoping for.  Much like Marshall will try to do to Wisconsin, the Badgers will also try to make Marshall beat them through the air.

Bielema is undefeated at Camp Randall stadium (15-0) and the Badgers have outscored opponents there 508-204 in those games, but if you think Marshall has some more upset magic this week, you can bet them at +21 to cover the spread at Bookmaker.com.
