Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills Picks & Predictions

Written by Steve Janus

Sunday the Miami Dolphins look to keep their playoff hopes alive on the road at Buffalo.  The Bills playoff hopes are virtually over as they’ve dropped 5 of their last 6 games, a streak that started back in October when the Bills lost at Miami 16-25.  They’ll be looking for revenge at home against a Miami team that has been finding ways to win tight games lately, winning 3 of their last 4 games by 4 points or less.  The line for the game is currently a pick ‘em, with the total set at 42.5 points.

On the offensive side of the ball the Dolphins have been consistent and their numbers reflect that.  There’s nothing flashy about the 21 points per game they are scoring, or the 354 yards of total offense, but it’s almost always enough to get the job done, if only by a few points.  Looking over their stats for the season, nothing really jumps out, except maybe the 7.6 yards per pass attempt, which shows that the Dolphins do have a tendency to break a big play through the air now and then.  This week the Dolphins face a Bills defense that has been a bit disappointing this season, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a talented bunch.

The defense for the Dolphins isn’t what it once was, but they are still stopping opponents enough to win football games.  They are giving up 21 points per game on 329 total yards of offense, numbers that aren’t really good and aren’t really bad.  They have been good on the road keeping opposing running backs under wraps, allowing only 83 yards per game, but their secondary has been giving a little too much up through the air in those same games.  They’ll face a Buffalo team this week that likes to try to establish the run, so their major focus will likely be on Marshawn Lynch and the rest of the Buffalo backfield.  The Dolphins are a PK this week at Buffalo.

The Bills don’t do a lot wrong on offense, but they don’t exactly impress you either.  They are scoring 23 points per game on 322 yards, split between 110 yards rushing per game and 212 yards passing per game.  It’s hard to put your finger on it, but it seems like teams have the Bills’ offense figured out this year.  They haven’t been getting as solid of production as they would like from either aspects of the offense, but they should be able to open it up a little this week against a Miami team that doesn’t have an especially dangerous defense.

Defensively, the Bills have also been mediocre.  They are giving up 21 points per game and 315 total yards per game, both numbers about the same as their offense produces, which might help explain the 6-6 record.  Coming into the season this was supposed to be a very strong group, but they just haven’t lived up to their expectations this year.  The Bills are at a pick ‘em with Miami this week.

This is a very evenly matched game between the Dolphins and the Bills.  The Dolphins got the best of Buffalo in Miami in their last meeting so the Bills will be looking to return the favor this Sunday.  The Bills aren’t totally out of the playoff picture, but the way they have been playing lately, it would be surprising to see them in the post season.  The ‘phins have a lot more to play for this week.
