Miami Dolphins at New York Jets NFL Predictions & Betting

Written by Jimmy Boyd

phins jets 102909The 2-4 Miami Dolphins head up the coast to take on the 4-3 New York Jets in a Week 8 AFC East showdown this Sunday. Last week, Miami looked good early, building a 21-point first half lead against the Saints, but it could not hold on. The Dolphins would eventually lose 46-34. Meanwhile, the Jets snapped their three-game losing streak with an impressive 38-0 shutout of the Raiders. These two AFC East rivals just met in Week 5 and that game was a nailbiter. The Dolphins won 31-27 on a 2-yard touchdown run from Ronnie Brown with just six seconds remaining. But that was a rare win in this series for the Dolphins of late as the Jets have won eight of the last 11 meetings. NFL odds makers expect New York to have its revenge at home this week, listing the Jets as 3-point favorites with the total set at 40.5.

If the Jets hope to earn a split in the season series, Ryan Ryan is going to have to figure out Miami’s Wildcat offense. Rex Ryan has eared the title of defensive mastermind, but his defense looked like it had never seen the Wildcat before when these teams faced off just a few weeks back. It certainly figures to be in the Jets’ favor that the Wildcat scheme is so fresh in their mind. If Ryan is able to control Miami’s running attack, the Jets stand an excellent chance to win this football game.

Offensively, New York is like Miami in that it has had great success running the football this season. Running it effectively becomes even more important now that rookie QB Mark Sanchez has had some turnover problems. The Jets were dealt a bad blow by losing game-breaker Leon Washington for the season. They were picked up last week by rookie running back Shonn Greene, who busted out for 144 yards and two scores. The Jets have now rushed for over 300 yards in each of their last two games and this figures to be the right recipe for success to take the pressure off of Sanchez. If Thomas Jones and Greene are able to have another big day, the Jets should come out on top. It is worth noting that the Dolphins are just 6-20-2 against the spread in their last 28 meetings with the Jets. If you like New York to even the score in the season series, bet the Jets at -3 at BetUS.

It’s desperation time for the defending AFC East champs, who now find themselves in last place in the division, three games back of the Patriots in the win column.  I don’t think Miami’s 2-4 record is an accurate indication of how good this football team is however.  The Dolphins could easily be 4-2 if they would have held on to defeat the Colts and the Saints. The good news this week is that they are playing a team they have already defeated. Rex Ryan is too good of football coach not to come up with an answer for the Wildcat so it will be up to the Dolphins to come up with some new wrinkles this week to keep New York guessing. The key for the Dolphins could actually be to pass the football effectively. Chad Henne played well in his first game against the Jets, completing 20 of 26 passes for 241 yards and two scores and he could be an even bigger key if New York has success in slowing down the running game. Miami better hope his confidence level is high and he is ready for the challenge after struggling against the Saints last week. He threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns in that game. It is worth noting that the Dolphins are an impressive 12-2 against the number in their last 14 road games versus a team with a winning home record. If you like Miami to pull of the season sweep, bet the Dolphins at +3 at BetUS.
