Miami Ohio at Buffalo Football Picks & Predictions

Week 11 college football betting action gets started off on Election Day on ESPN 2 with the Miami Ohio at Buffalo MAC matchup. Odds makers have spoken, making Buffalo the early 8-point favorite.

It looked like the Miami Ohio Redhawks were on the right track with a win over Bowling Green on October 18th, but how quickly things can change in the exciting MAC division. A week later the Redhawks were handed their worst homecoming loss ever - a 54-21 defeat to Kent State. It was also the most points Miami Ohio had ever given up at Yager Stadium.

Hopefully the 10-day layoff will serve the Redhawks well as they head to Buffalo to take on the current MAC East leaders.

The offense has not been able to get it done for Miami Ohio this season, averaging only 18.5 points per contest. It’s not that Miami hasn’t been able to move the football, it’s that it has shot itself in the foot numerous times with costly mistakes. The Redhawks turned the ball over six times against Kent State in their last game. Miami’s turnover margin of -8 is the worst in the MAC and 106th in the nation.

The RedHawks will have a little bit of history on their side heading into Buffalo, having never lost to the Bulls in the previous ten meetings between the schools.

While giving up 54 points to the Golden Flashes looks bad, much of that was due to those six costly turnover. On the season, the defense has been pretty good. Miami ranks third in the MAC in total defense, allowing only 344.2 yards per game. Linebacker Joey Hudson is one of the elite defensive players in the conference, averaging 10 tackles per game.

If Miami is going to challenge the Bulls this week, they are going to need another strong game from freshman running back JR Taylor. When starter Thomas Merriweather went down, Taylor stepped in and shined immediately, rushing for 127 and 113 yards in back-to-back weeks. The passing offense remains a weak spot, but making the switch to redshirt freshman Clay Benton, who has passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns in his two starts, is an improvement. If you think the Redhawks’ defense is good enough to keep this one within the number, bet Miami Ohio at BetUS and receive up to a 50% sign up bonus.

Buffalo’s James Starks rushed for a season-high 185 yards and two touchdowns while the defense forced five turnovers to help the Bulls defeat Ohio 32-19 last week.

With the win, the Bulls pulled into a tie with Akron in the MAC East at 2-2 while Ohio dropped to last place at 1-4.

Whenever Buffalo needs a big play, it looks to its running game, but it had been a major disappointment for most of the season. The entered last weeks game ranked 10th in the MAC in rushing, averaging only 114.7 yards per game. But now that Starks is healthy, I expect the Bulls to be able to move the football on the ground.

Starks combined with sophomore tailback Brandon Thermilus for 258 yards and the Bulls finished with 279 yards rushing against Ohio.

QB Drew Willy has also run the offense effectively while taken good care of the football this season. He was 14 of 21 for 116 yards and a score last week.

Buffalo backers may be a little scared of getting beat with a backdoor cover with Miami Ohio this week. The Bulls had a chance to really bury the Bobcats last week but let them back into it due to failed execution and conservative play calling. If you like the Bulls to take care of business this week, bet Buffalo at -8 at BetUS.
