2009 Capital One Bowl Predictions: Michigan State vs Georgia Football Odds
On New Year’s Day the Georgia Bulldogs of the SEC and the Michigan State Spartans, representing the Big 10, will meet in Orlando, Florida for the 2009 Capital One Bowl. Georgia ended their regular season with a difficult loss at the hands of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Michigan State also lost in their season closer in a 18-49 setback against conference champ Penn State. The point spread has been set for the game with Georgia as an 8 point favorite and the total for the game set for 56 points.
The Georgia Bulldogs feature two of the elite offensive players in the nation with quarterback Matthew Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno. The pair lead an offense that averaged 32.1 points per game on 433.9 total offensive yards per contest. Over on the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs had a decidedly average season. Touted as one of the best defenses in the nation in the pre-season, Georgia came up short of expectations by allowing 25.6 points per game and 318 total yards per game. Particularly concerning for the Bulldogs is their secondary, which allows foes to gain 12.4 yards per completed pass. Georgia has not done well in forcing turnovers this season, something they will need to do in the Cap One Bowl if they are going to win and cover the 8 point spread. The Bulldogs have been made 8 point favorites at Bookmaker.com.
Michigan State surprised a lot of people with their 9-3 season. The Spartans were aided greatly by the work of starting tailback, Javon Ringer, one of the best backs in the nation, who racked up 1,590 yards and 21 touchdowns this year. This is especially impressive considering that every team that Michigan State played keyed on Ringer and stuffed the box to try to stop him. A power back in the mold of a Brandon Jacobs, Ringer will be the key to the Spartan’s success against Georgia. State put together an average defensive campaign in 2008, allowing 21.9 points per game and 357.9 yards per game, ranking them around the middle of the pack in the nation in most defensive categories. The team will face one of their biggest challenges to date as they try to slow Stafford and Moreno.
When you get right down to it, the outcome of this game comes down to the performance of its standout players. How will Michigan State stop Moreno and Stafford or can this under-achieving Georgia defense stop Javon Ringer? These questions will be answered in an SEC/Big Ten showdown on New Year’s day!
