Michigan State at Penn State Football Odds
In what has shaped up to be a game between two of the best teams in the Big 10 this season, the Penn State Nittany Lions host the Michigan State Spartans. Penn State has earned a 10-1 record this year and is set for a Rose Bowl trip, but they have a game this week against a very tough Michigan State squad that is currently 9-2 and ranked #17 in the nation. Penn State knows that know is not the time to get sloppy and you know that head coach Joe Paterno will have his team ready to perform at their best.
Penn State is currently a 15.5 point favorite over Michigan State this week, the total for the game has been set at 48 points.
Michigan State hasn’t been the best on offense this season, but they are certainly above average putting up 27 points per game on 355 yards of total offense. Their main source of production comes from running back Javon Ringer, who is second in the nation in rushing with 1,548 yards and who has accounted for 20 touchdowns in 11 games this year. The quarterback position has been the source of some difficultly for the offense, though, as starting QB Bryan Hoyer is completing just 49 percent of his passes and has thrown 6 interceptions to go with only 9 touchdowns. They don’t need Hoyer to be great, they just need him to be smart with the football, and, of course, to hand the ball off to Ringer as often as possible.
The Michigan State defense will have their work cut out for them, but if their numbers are any indication of how good they are, the Spartans look to be up for the challenge. They are holding opposing teams to just under 20 points per game and 340 yards of total offense. This have been an active unit, collecting 23 sacks, 13 interceptions and recovering 9 fumbles so far this year. They’ll need at least a few turnovers to have a chance at Penn State this weekend.

Penn State’s offense is truly one of the elite squads in the nation this year, especially when you consider the amount of balance they’ve been able to achieve. PSU scores just under 40 points per game and averages 443 yards per game (218 rushing and 225 passing). There’s no one way to beat the Nittany Lions, Michigan State will need to find a way to stop the run and the pass if they want to contend on Saturday.
Speaking of elite squads, the Penn State defensive unit is just as impressive as their offense, if not more so. They’ve allowed just 258 total yards per game, resulting in holding opponents to just 12 points per game. To get an idea of just how good this defense is, take a look at Aaron Maybin, who has 12 sacks himself, which is half of what the whole Michgan State team has this season and more than some Division I teams have combined. This could be Ringer’s toughest contest to date as the Lions will be keying on him. They’ll need to have someone else step up and take some of the pressure off of him if they are to be successful.
Penn State is better than Michigan State on both sides of the ball, but that doesn’t mean the Nittany Lions aren’t vulnerable. If Michigan State can find a few viable options on offense outside of Javon Ringer and they can find a way to stop the best offense in the conference, the do have a chance.
