Middle Tennessee State at Troy Football Lines & Picks
The 3-1 Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders take on the 2-2 Troy Trojans at Movie Gallery Stadium in Troy, Alabama Tuesday night in a Sun Belt Conference showdown on ESPN 2. Troy has won each of the last three meetings, including last year’s 31-17 win on the road, and football odds makers believe the Trojans will make it four in a row, listing Troy as the 4.5-point favorite.

The Blue Raiders are off to a strong 3-1 start, their best start since 2001 when they opened up the season 5-0 and earned a share of the Sun Belt title with North Texas. If they hope to capture another Sun Belt title, they’ll need to get past Troy, the team picked to win the Sun Belt, Tuesday night.
This game figures to be decided by the team that plays the better defensively and that could give the edge to Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raider defense has played well each of the last three weeks. Its blitz packages have been effective and it has come up with 13 turnovers on the season. But this gambling-style defense isn’t without its faults as the Blue Raiders have given up quite a few big plays. Offensively, QB Dwight Dasher is off to a strong start, throwing for more than 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns and rushing for more than 250 yards and another three scores. He has thrown five picks on the season, though, and he’ll have to limit those to give his team the best chance to win this week. It is also worth noting that the Blue Raiders are 12-3 against the spread in their last 15 October games. If you think the Blue Raiders have what it takes to pull off the upset, bet Middle Tennessee State at +4.5 at BetUS.
Troy got off to a disappointing 0-2 start, but the Trojans have bounced back with back-to-back wins, including an impressive road win at Arkansas State in their conference opener. The Trojans look to continue their title quest Tuesday against a team they have defeated three straight times and four of the last five.
Led by star QB Levi Brown, who has thrown for 1,097 yards and five touchdowns with a 63.7 percent completion rate, the Trojans offense has big time potential, but the unit must quit shooting itself in the foot with false starts and illegal formation penalties. Hopefully, the bye week gave Troy some time to iron out those glitches. The last two games, the offense has improved, though, averaging 28.5 points. The running game has been better the last two games and that has helped the passing game become even tougher to stop. Defensively, Troy’s front seven is playing well, and it has to, because the unit has four new starters in the secondary. The Trojans have come up with six sacks and 26 hurries through their first four games and they must mount a solid pass rush to stop MTSU this week. It is worth noting that the Trojans are a perfect 4-0 against the number in their last four games following a bye week. If you like this trend to continue, bet Troy at -4.5 at BetUS.
