Middle Tennessee State at Louisiana-Lafayette Football Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

Since winning four in a row, the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns have lost three straight. The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders enter this game on the other end of the stick, rebounding from three straight losses to carry a three game winning streak into this one. Both teams are at 5-6 but only one can finish the year at .500 with a win this season and the books think that team will be Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin’ Cajuns are listed as the 4.5-point favorite with the total set at 58.

Louisiana-Lafayette college football betting backers are a solid 3-1 straight up and against the spread at home this season and 4-2 straight up and against the spread in conference play, but the bottom has fallen out in each of their past three games with a home loss to UTEP followed by a pair of road defeats to Florida Atlantic and Troy. The Ragin’ Cajuns did not beat the football odds in any of those three games. Last week’s 48-3 blowout loss at Troy cost LA-Lafayette a chance win the outright Sun Belt title and it also dealt its bowl chances a major blow. ULL needs to beat Middle Tennessee and get some help from Arkansas State to share the league title with Troy and Arkansas State. That’s the best case scenario that faces the Ragin’ Cajuns now.

ULL was dominated in every facet of the game versus Troy and the Ragin’ Cajun defense allowed a gaudy 400 yards rushing to the Trojans. ULL was in a great position to win the conference and to play in a bowl game went it was 5-3 and riding a four-game winning streak, but its recent slide and put in under the .500 mark.

Senior tailback Tyrell Fenroy has had a sensational year for the Cajuns with 1,292 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season. By breaking the 1,000-yard barrier, he became just the seventh running back in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards in four straight seasons. However, he sustained a shoulder injury and was held to just 23 yards rushing against Troy. QB Michael Desormeaux was able to gobble up some yards against the Trojans, running for 136 on 15 carries. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons.

If ULL wins this game, it will be because of another strong day from the running game. If it loses, it will likely be because of its lack of ability to stop the running attack of Middle Tennessee State. ULL’s rush defense was horrible against Troy, which gained 391 yards on the ground. Another very weak area for the Cajuns was third down situations where they were just 1 of 12 against Troy. And they were flagged for 15 penalties totaling more than 100 yards. If you like the Ragin’ Cajuns to turn things around this week, bet Louisiana-Lafayette at -4.5 at Bookmaker.

Middle Tennessee State has won three consecutive games and is coming off a 52-13 drubbing of North Texas, but coach Rick Stockstill knows his team cannot afford to be lulled to sleep by its recent success and ULL recent slide. Stockstill also knows the key to victory will be stopping Fenroy, just as Troy did, and had this to say; ” (Fenroy) is the most productive running back in the history of this conference,” Stockstill said. “He’s one of the best running backs in the country. I promise you he’ll play, whatever is banged up, nicked up on him, I promise you when that whistle blows next week he’ll line up and we’re expecting him to play … like he has all year. Middle Tennessee State could be facing another challenge besides Fenroy however. It is just 1-5 on the road this season and 0-4 in grass games. If you think the Blue Raiders can ride their momentum to another big win, bet Middle Tennessee State at +4.5 at Bookmaker.
