Mississippi State at Alabama Football Odds
The undefeated, number one ranked Alabama Crimson Tide try to keep their perfect season alive at home against Mississippi State this week. The Tide have obviously impressed so far this year. They’ve beaten teams like Georgia and LSU on the road, plus managed to avoid any upsets. This has given them enough juice to earn #1 status in the BCS rankings. Their bid for the Championship, will likely be decided by the SEC Championship game, with their most likely opponent being Florida. Mississippi State hasn’t fared well against their SEC opponents this year to say the least. They are just 1-4 so far in SEC play, granted it’s been a difficult road, but the Bulldogs just aren’t up to the form of the rest of the conference. Alabama is a 22 point favorite over Mississippi State this week with the total set at 40.5 points.
It’s been hard going for the Mississippi State offense this year against some stiff conference defense. So far they’ve only produced 16 points per game on 295.9 total yards. There isn’t a star to speak of on this side of the ball, but running back Anthony Dixon has put together a fair season, carrying the ball for 4.2 yards per carry and 647 rushing yards. The passing attack, if you can call it that, is lead by Tyson Lee, who has 1,119 yards but just four touchdowns with four interceptions. It won’t get any easier this week against an Alabama defense that ranks among the tops in the nation.
The Mississippi State defense has been solid, but not impressive. They’ve given up an average of 21 points per game on just under 300 yards of total offense. This isn’t a team that’s going to blow anyone away on defense, they play pretty conservatively, but effectively. This week will push the Bulldogs as much as any other week they’ve played. The Bulldogs aren’t getting much credit on the road, Mississippi State is a 22 point underdog.
Alabama hasn’t had many problems scoring points in the SEC this year. So far they are averaging around 32 points per game and 367 yards of total offense. The running attack is scary good averaging nearly 200 yards per game. The Tide have two legitimate threats at running back with Julio Jones and Glenn Coffee. Their passing attack is modest, but effective, however, the Tide will look to run first this week, just as they have all season long.
Against some stiff competition, Alabama has held opponents to just 13 points per game on 264 total yards. They won’t have much trouble stuffing the Mississippi State running game, against better running attacks they’ve allowed only 79 yards per game and kept opposing backs under 3 yards per carry. There will be plenty of pressure forced by this squad as well. So far this year they’ve already forced 20 turnovers and recorded 19 sacks. If Mississippi State isn’t worried about getting rid of the ball quickly already, they better start thinking about it. Bama out ranks the Bulldogs in almost every category, that’s probably why the Crimson Tide are 22 point favorites at home this week.
There’s little doubt that the Crimson Tide walk out of this one still undefeated. Mississippi State is out-matched all over the field. I’d like to say that the Bulldogs have a chance at winning this game, but they simply do not.
