MLB Power Rankings: Dodgers On Top, For Now
1. Los Angeles Dodgers (21-9, 1st NL West)
The Dodgers top the list with the best record in baseball. They started the season 13-0 at home to break the modern day record for most consecutive home wins to begin a season. Then Manny got hit with a 50-game ban for using a banned substance and the Dodgers blew a 6-run lead to the lowly Washington Nationals last night for their first home loss of the season. It’s going to be interesting to see how LA does now that Manny is being Manny, again. It was only a matter of time, right?
2. Toronto Blue Jays (20-11, 1st AL East)
We always knew the Blue Jays had the arms to be competitive with ace Roy Halladay leading the charge (6-1 3.29 ERA), but now the young bats are providing more than adequate support, leading the bigs in batting average (.292) and runs per game (6.13).
3. St. Louis Cardinals (19-10, 1st NL Central)
This division was supposed to belong to the Cubs, but the Cards have an early 2.5-game lead on Chicago as their pitching staff has exceeded expectations, even without Chris Carpenter. What has Albert Pujols done? He’s hitting .356 with 11 round trippers. It’s going to be another MVP-caliber year for the big fella.
4. Boston Red Sox (18-11, 2nd AL East)
The Red Sox continue to win games and Big Papi hasn’t even hit a homerun yet. The rest of the guys are doing a pretty good job of picking up the slack though, and the Red Sox bullpen has been brilliant, currently No. 2 in ERA in the American League (3.07 ERA).
5. Kansas City Royals (18-11, 1st AL Central)
This is a misprint, right? It still might be a little early to make any bold predictions, but the Royals appear ready to contend in 2009, winning behind timely hitting, and a pitching staff which boasts ace Zack Greinke (6-0 0.40 ERA). This year’s Tampa Bay Rays?
6. Chicago Cubs (16-12, 2nd NL Central)
For as much as the Cubs have struggled early on, they still have the 3rd best record in the National League. The Cubs have had several injuries to key players in the early going, with Carlos Zambrano being the latest, but if they can shake the injury bug they’ll be just fine. Alfonso Soriano has been carrying the offensive load with 9 homeruns and 17 RBIs.
7. Philadelphia Phillies (14-12, 1st NL East)
The reigning World Series Champs are out of the gate slow, but they still find themselves in the top spot out East. They have to be pleased with that, considering.
8. Texas Rangers (15-13, 1st AL West)
What? The Angels aren’t already running away with the AL West. Texas is hitting the snot out of the ball early on and its pitching has been average, which is much better than we saw last season. If the pitching continues to improve, Texas has the bats to win the West.
9. Milwaukee Brewers (16-13, 3rd NL Central)
No Sabathia. No problem. The Brewers have plenty of power in their lineup to swing the sticks with the best of ‘em, and the all-time saves leader, Trevor Hoffman, has helped the Brew Crew alleviate its biggest weakness. 4-0 in save opportunities this season.
10. New York Mets (14-13, 2nd NL East)
I have to think the Mets are going to come around at some point with the amount of talent on this team. Let’s just talk about ace Johan Santana, who appears to be headed for a Cy Young with a 4-1 record and a 0.91 ERA.
Make sure you’re doing your baseball betting on the 2007 MLB World Handicapping Champion’s MLB expect picks this season for the most winners in the industry against the MLB odds.
