this season. Good pitching is a great place to start
when thinking about which teams have the best chance at
making World Series runs. The next thing you should
think about is if these good pitching teams have a good
defense behind them. Hitting tends to get most of the
attention in the sport of baseball, but good pitching
and defense will keep you in every game. Then all you
need is one timely hit and you win the game.
When I’m talking about good pitching, I’m not just
talking about the starting rotation. The starters can’t
go a full nine innings every time out. The middle
relievers and closers are so important to putting a team
into the championship caliber category. With all the
talk about Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams and a dozen
other Yankees over the years, if it wasn’t for Mariano
Rivera the pin stripes might not have been such a
postseason threat.
Good hitting teams are fun to watch, but they don’t have
the upper hand when it comes to postseason success. The
old saying “defense wins championships” applies to
baseball as well.
So for you futures bettors out their, when you are
evaluating which team you think could go all the way
this year, you better make sure they have a solid
pitching staff and great defense or you will just be
