NBA Playoff Odds: Dallas Mavericks vs. Denver Nuggets Game 2
The Denver Nuggets continued their dominance in the 2009 NBA Playoffs with a 109-95 win over the Dallas Mavericks in Game 1 of their second round Western Conference Playoff Series. Now, the Dallas Mavericks will be looking to bounce back strong when the two teams meet in Denver on Tuesday, May 5th at 10:30 pm EST. The game can be seen on TNT as part of a playoffs double header with the Hawks/Cavaliers. NBA odds makers expect Denver to hold serve at home and have listed the Nuggets as 6.5-point favorites with the total set at 205.5.
Including the playoffs, Denver is a spectacular 37-8 at home this season. Sunday’s Game 1 victory, marked the sixth straight win for the Nuggets over the Mavericks. As was the case in Denver’s first round series, the Nuggets are proving to have more fire power than their opponent. While much gets made of starters Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, it is often times the guys coming off the bench which give the Nuggets a big edge. J.R. Smith, Anthony Carter, and Chris Andersen all scored in double figures off the Denver bench to outscore the Mavericks’ bench by 9 points, and that was pretty much the difference in the game. Another big key for Denver’s success is its improvement on the defensive end. The Nuggets ranked 18th in points allowed during the regular season, giving up 100.9 points per game, but they are yet to allow a team over the century mark in these playoffs. If you think Denver can put the Mavs in a 2-0 hole and beat the number in the process, bet the Nuggets at-6.5 at BetUS and receive up to 145 percent in sign up bonuses.
It was obvious that the Mavericks were the better team in their first round series with the Spurs as they had more offensive weapons, but now they are up against one of the best offensive teams in the NBA with eight players averaging eight or more points per game. The good news for the Mavs is that Dirk Nowitzky was able to get off to a good start in the series with a 28-point, 10-rebound performance, but the bad news is that it did not result in a win. One major thing that stuck out in Game 1 was that guard J.J. Barea was not nearly as effective as he was in the San Antonio series. The Nuggets are a much quicker team that the Spurs, and it showed, as Barea was not able to get anywhere he wanted to on the floor like he had in round one. Basketball is a simple game. You either have to outscore your opponent or shut your opponent down, and I don’t see the Mavericks winning this series if it becomes a track meet. I know Dallas likes to run and gun, but winning in the playoffs is about strategy, and the Mavs seem to be most effective when posting Dirk Nowitzky in the half court. If you think Dallas will make the necessary adjustments to steal away home court, just as it did in its first round series, bet the Mavericks at +6.5 at BetUS.
