NBA Playoff Odds: Denver Nuggets vs. Dallas Mavericks Game 4

Written by Jimmy Boyd

nugs-mavs-game-4-51109The Denver Nuggets have a chance to close out their second round series with the Dallas Mavericks Monday, May 11th,  after a controversial Game 3 win. The Mavericks had a foul to give in the closing seconds, and it appeared that they did give it, but a no-call by the officials, one that the NBA has since apologized for, allowed Carmelo Anthony to get off a three-pointer to win the game. You can catch Game 4 at 9:30 pm EST on TNT tonight. NBA odds makers are expecting another barn burner, listing the home Mavericks as 1.5-point favorites with the total set at 210.

The key to picking tonight’s matchup seemingly hinges on one question: will the Mavericks pack it in after feeling foiled by the officials in Game 3 or will they show resiliency tonight? One player we can expect to be ready to play is Dirk Nowitzky, who has been brilliant in this series despite dealing with off-the-court issues. Dirk is averaging 32 points per game and 11.7 rebounds per contest.  It is going to take another great game from Dirk as well as some big help from Jason Terry to get the job done. Mavs forward Josh Howard does face a possible suspension for his Game 3 post game antics. Howard went after referee Mark Wunderlich, the one who blew the call, and let him have it with his best Ozzie Guillen impersonation. However, I would be a little surprised if the NBA acts on this as they have admitted that the official blew the call, and benching Howard would only further punish the Mavs for an event that likely wouldn’t have transpired otherwise. If you think Dallas comes ready to play tonight, bet the Mavericks at -1.5 at Bookmaker and receive a 20 percent cash sign up bonus.

The Denver Nuggets were able to steal Game 3, despite not playing very well, thanks to a huge three-point buzzer beater by Melo. Now, they have an opportunity to end this series in 4 games so that they can rest up while the Lakers and Rockets battle in out. The key for Denver is going to be to play with a sense of urgency, which can be hard to do when you know you know you are going back home for Game 5 if you don’t get the job done. In Game 3, Denver’s two biggest stars carried the load while the rest of the team struggled. Chauncey Billups went off for 32 points and Carmelo Anthony came through with 31. Both players did a great job of taking the ball to the basket to draw fouls, combining to shoot 22 of 26 from the free throw line. This was crucial as all the fouls really disrupted the flow of the game, not allowing the Mavericks to pull away despite out playing Denver. For Denver to win Game 4, it will likely need its bench to play much better than it did last game. It scored only 18 points in Game 3, which is well below its season average. If you like Denver to close out the series tonight, bet the Nuggets at +1.5 at Bookmaker.
