NBA Playoff Odds: Los Angeles Lakers vs.Houston Rockets Game 4

Written by Jimmy Boyd

lakers-rockets-gm-4-5909The Los Angeles Lakers regained home court with a 108-94 win over the Houston Rockets on Friday night. Jordan Farmar stepped in nicely for the suspended Derek Fisher and the defending Western Conference champions didn’t miss a beat. Game 4 tips on Mother’s Day at 3:30 pm EST on ABC and NBA odds makers clearly see Los Angeles with the momentum, listing the Lakers are 3.5-point favorites with the total set at 194.

While the Lakers are known for being an offensive team with a bevy of superstars, it was their defense that earned them a road victory in Game 3 of their Western Conference Playoff series with the Houston Rockets. The Lakers held the Rockets to just 18 second quarter and 16 third quarter points to pull away. While Los Angeles is now sitting in good position to win this series, it would like to slam the door on the Rockets by taking Game 4 as well so that it can have a chance to close out the series back in LA in Game 5. Kobe Bryant has been as good as advertised, scoring over 30 points for the third straight game in the series. Many experts cited Aaron Brooks’ ability to get into the lane in Game 1 as a major key to the Rockets victory. With Jordan Farmar starting and defending Brooks, he was held to just 7 points and 1 assist in Game 3. This leaves Phil Jackson to decide whether he should continue to start the quicker Farmar when Fisher is once again available in Game 4. If you think Los Angeles has what it takes to win both games in Houston, bet the Lakers at -3.5 at Bookmaker and receive a 20 percent cash bonus.

Superior post defense on Yao Ming in the second half forced the Rockets into taking way too many three-point shots, and when they weren’t going down, the Lakers were able to build a double digit lead. Yao did perform better than he did in Game 2, finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds, but he wasn’t nearly as efficient as we are used to seeing, getting his points on just 6 of 14 shooting. All who watched Game 3 noticed Yao hobbling down the stretch as he refused to come out of the game with an injured ankle. He is listed as probable for Game 4. While it is important that the Rockets make this a half court series anyway, Yao’s injury makes it even more imperative as he will be a non-factor in an uptempo contest. You can count on the Rockets giving the Lakers their best shot in Game 4 as it is a do-or-die game in many ways with the series shifting back to LA for Game 5. The Rockets lack the fire power that the Lakers have so they are going to have to win with their defense like they did in Game 1. Holding the Lakers under 100 points is a must for a chance to win. If you expect the Houston defense to step up in Game 4, bet the Rockets at +3.5 at Bookmaker.

The face of the series has changed. The Rockets have become a perimeter team and have to shoot the lights out to give the Lakers a run for their money.

Although Scola is hard-nosed I think that Gasol has a field day from here on out.

Waiting for the Cavs – Lakers/Denver final. It’ll be fun.
