NBA Power Rankings: Boston Rolling
1. Boston Celtics (41-9)
Kevin Garnett has missed time with a flu bug but the Celtics keep right on rolling. They got some magic from Ray Allen last night, hitting a game winner in Philly, to extend their winning streak to 12 games. Boston gets a rematch with the Lakers Thursday night in a game which will likely decide who’s on top of the power rankings next week.
2. Los Angeles Lakers (38-9)
LA was dealt a big blow with Andrew Bynum expected to miss 8-12 weeks with a knee injury. LA was able to get to the NBA Finals without the injured Bynum and year ago and Kobe is out to prove that they can do it again. Kobe dropped in 61 points at Madison Square Garden Monday night. His performance was so good that no one even talked about Pau Gasol going for 31 points and 14 boards in that game. LA’s first major test without Bynum will be Thursday in Boston.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers (38-9)
The Cavs have won 7 of their last 8 and are happy to have both Big Z (Zydrunas Ilgauskas) and Ben Wallace back in the lineup. While LeBron James gets all the headlines, it is Mo Williams, in my opinion, that has helped the Cavs reach that next level this season.
4. Orlando Magic (36-11)
The Magic were dealt a huge blow by losing point guard Jameer Nelson to a shoulder injury. With Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis teaming with Dwight Howard, the Magic still have enough talent to make a run in the postseason, but only time will tell how much Nelson’s injury is really going to affect this team.
5. San Antonio Spurs (33-15)
I would not be surprised if the Spurs crack the top 3 on this list before the season is over. The Spurs have won 8 of 10 and have one of the best trios in the NBA in Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli, and Tim Duncan. Duncan looks as healthy and is playing as well as I’ve seen him play in several years and he could be what puts San Antonio over the top in a playoff showdown with the Lakers.
6. Denver Nuggets (32-16)
Denver has come out smelling like roses with the Chauncey Billups deal and the improved play of Nene has also made the Nuggets one of the elite teams in the West.
7. Portland Trail Blazers (30-17)
Portland is right on Denver’s heels in the NBA Northwest. The Blazers have won 5 straight including a big road win over New Orleans Monday night. The Blazers have been great at home, but they are playing only .500 ball on the road. Taking their home show on the road should be Portland’s major focus in the season’s second half.
8. Houston Rockets (30-19)
I know you hear this a lot, but I would love to see what this team could do if it was ever healthy for an entire season. Hopefully it will at least be completely healthy for the playoffs. The big key for Houston this season is the play of Aaron Brooks off the bench. He is giving the Rockets a consistent scoring threat each night out in the second group.
9. Dallas Mavericks (28-19)
The Mavs have won 3 in a row, including a big win over Orlando Monday. Mavs are playing better ball than division rival New Orleans right now and that has them getting into the top ten for the first time all season.
10. Miami Heat (26-21)
With Atlanta struggling, it won’t be long now before Miami surpasses the Hawks in the division standings. The Heat have won 4 of 6 with one of those wins coming over first place Orlando.
