NCAA Basketball Betting on 2008 Maryland Terrapins
Even though we have loved what Gary Williams has been able to do for this program, if you have been doing any NCAA basketball betting on Maryland this year then you have struggled to keep your bankroll afloat. Williams has brought this school to the national spotlight in terms of quality basketball programs and even has a national championship under his belt, but this year the team is struggling and their against the spread (ATS) numbers show that.
Maryland stands right now at 10-7 straight-up (SU) so you know that the Terrapins are only a mediocre squad. This is a young team that has three quality sophomores in guards Greivis Vasquez, who with 16.5 ppg is the team’s leading scorer, and Eric Hayes (11.0 ppg), and at forward there is Landon Milbourne who throws in 7.3 ppg. While these youngsters take their lumps and try to completely buy in to what Williams is trying to sell them, it might be best to fade Maryland for awhile. They are just 4-8 ATS overall, including a 2-5 ATS mark at home.
There isn’t any break in the foreseeable future either as Maryland gets games against Wake Forest (11-4 SU, 5-4-1 ATS), North Carolina (17-0 SU, 12-2 ATS), Duke (12-1 SU, 6-6 ATS), Virginia (10-3 SU, 5-3 ATS) and Georgia Tech (7-8 SU, 5-8 ATS). While the Yellow Jackets could be a team the Terrapins can beat, you can’t really expect the team to be considered the favorite in the other four.
The problem for Maryland has been on the offensive side of the ball. The team scores 71.5 ppg but is only shooting 44% from the field. From long range it gets worse with a shooting percentage of 31.6%. Greivis and Hayes may be the two of the team’s leading scorers but they are shooting only 41% from the floor. Defensively though the team is good enough to keep games close as they are allowing just 36.5% shooting from their opponents, good for 4th in the nation.
Keep an eye on when this team turns it around, and you could see some value in the college basketball odds that helps you pocket a little extra money in your bankroll. I know we will be watching them when we make our NCAA basketball picks each night.
