New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts NFL Picks & Betting Lines

Written by Jimmy Boyd on November 13, 2009

The 6-2 AFC East leading New England Patriots head to Indy looking to hand the 8-0 AFC South leading Colts their first loss of the season on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Last week, the Patriots earned a hard fought 27-17 victory over division rival Miami and the Colts hung on for a 20-17 win against division rival Houston. These two teams last met last season with the Colts sneaking past the Brady-less Patriots 18-15. The win was Indy’s fourth in the last five meetings. NFL odds makers expect Indy to remain unbeaten this week, listing the Colts as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 49.5.

Indianapolis has won 17 consecutive regular season games and it can make it 18 in a row if Peyton Manning, who leads the NFL with 222 completions this year, can out perform Tom Brady. The Colts versus Patriots has been perhaps the NFL’s best rivalry this decade and Manning and Brady have taken on the leading roles. Brady and his Pats were a thorn in Manning’s side early on, winning the first six meetings. But Manning and the Colts have struck back, taking three of the last four. With Brady now looking settled in after some early season struggles following knee surgery and with Manning looking to be one of the front runners for the MVP, we could be in for a good old fashioned wild west shootout.

I expect both Brady and Manning to bring their A-game so this one very well could fall on the defenses. For Indy, I expect no player to have a larger impact than Dwight Freeney. The Pro Bowl defensive end has been downright scary good this season, tallying at least one sack in every game. With Freeney likely to line up outside Patriots rookie offensive lineman Sabastian Vollmer, he could be Brady’s worst nightmare Sunday night. It is worth noting that the Patriots are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings in this series. If you like Indy to stay unbeaten and to cover the field goal spread in the process, bet the Colts at -3 at Sportsbook.com.

Now that Tony Dungy is no longer on the sidelines for the Colts, the coaching edge has to go to Bill Belichick and his staff. Don’t be surprised if Belichick decides to attack the banged up Indy defensive backfield early and often with Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Belichick rarely gets outcoached and his strategies, which have made life difficult for the Colts in the past, could be the deciding factor Sunday night. It is worth noting that the Underdog is 11-3-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings in this matchup. If you like this trend to continue, bet the Patriots at +3 at Sportsbook.com.
