New England Patriots at New York Jets NFL Week 2 Betting Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd on September 15, 2009

pats jets 91509The New England Patriots and the New York Jets face off this Sunday at the Meadowlands in an AFC East battle in Week 2 action. Both teams took care of business in Week 1, but it was the Jets that turned in the more dominant effort. Behind rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, New York crushed Houston on the road 24-7 while outgaining the Texans 462-183. Meanwhile, the Patriots survived division rival Buffalo by just one point on Monday Night Football, breathing a sigh of relief that quarterback Tom Brady made it through the first game of the season without sustaining another season-ending injury. The Jets won the last meeting in this series, a 34-31 shootout in Foxboro last November, but the series has been all Patriots of late, especially on the road. The Patriots are 9-1 in their last 10 at the Meadowlands and 10-0 against the number in those games. In fact, New England’s road success has extended throughout the AFC East as it is 12-1 straight up and against the spread in its last 13 road games against its division. The New England Patriots are listed as a 5.5-point favorite with the total set at 46.5.

While Tom Brady started off slow in Week 1, he finished in style. The All-Pro quarterback led the Patriots to two touchdowns in the final minutes to pull out a one-point victory over Buffalo. The offense looks like it will once again be a formidable unit, led by dangerous wide receivers Randy Moss and Wes Welker, who combined for 24 catches and 234 yards. But the defense, which features quite a few new faces, will be asked to improve quickly. The Patriots were pretty strong against the run last week, limiting Buffalo to 90 yards, but they allowed Trent Edwards to go 15 of 25 for 212 yards and two touchdowns on his way to a 114.1 passer rating. Most of those numbers fall on the secondary as the front line was able to do a pretty good job of applying pressure, sacking Edwards four times. If you expect New England to continue its dominance on the road in division play, bet the Patriots at -5.5 at Bookmaker.

Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez and first-year head coach Rex Ryan got off to a great start last week. Sanchez looked good, completing 18 of 31 passes for 272 yards and got a nice boost from Thomas Jones in the running game as well. The big story for me, though, was how good the defense looked under defensive guru Rex Ryan. The Jets looked much better defensively than they ever did last season, holding one of the NFL’s best offenses in 2008 to just 183 yards and seven points. This week will be the true test for Sanchez and the Jets as they try to prove to themselves and their fans that they are ready to challenge the Patriots for an AFC East title. The Jets’ defensive pressure was able to get to Matt Schaub in Week 1, but they will have to be much better in Week 2 with Brady standing in the pocket. Brady got better and better as the game went on against the Bills. It will be crucial that the Jets put him on his backside as often as possible to keep him from finding a rhythm. If you think New York has what it takes to pull off the upset, bet the Jets at +5.5 at Bookmaker.
