New England Patriots at Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL Spread & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

pats-bucs-102109The New England Patriots take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London, England in a Week 7 non-conference clash. Last week, Tom Brady and the New England offense looked like the 2007 version when they destroyed Tennessee 59-0. The Bucs fell to the Panthers 28-21 to remain winless on the year. These teams last met in the 2005 season with New England pitching a 28-0 shutout to improve to 4-2 in the all-time series. The books expect New England to blow out another winless team this week, listing the Patriots as a 15-point favorite with the total set at 45.

Tom Brady has been superb in non-conference play, winning his last 12 games against the NFC. He can run that streak to 13 if he has another game like he had last week. Brady threw for 380 yards and six touchdowns in just over a half against Tennessee. He has been up and down this season, though, so putting together back-to-back dominant efforts would be a good sign that Tom Terrific is back. He will have an excellent chance to post big numbers again versus a Tampa Bay defense that has allowed 13 passing touchdowns, the third-most in the NFL this season. It is also allowing opposing QB’s to post a healthy 101.0 passer rating on the year.

If anything is going to slow down the high-powered New England offense this week, it could be playing across the ocean on a suspect Wembley Stadium turf. We’ve seen a pair of rainy games the last two seasons in London and the turf looked pretty chewed up. While the Patriots are more used to playing in such conditions in the northeast, it is definitely harder to throw the football down field in rainy weather. It is worth noting that the Patriots are 23-9 against the spread in their last 32 games following a straight up win of more than 14 points. If you like New England to run up the score again this week, bet the Patriots at -15 at Bookmaker.

For Tampa Bay to compete with New England Sunday, they are going to need a big game from QB Josh Johnson threw the air and on the ground. New England is yet to face a QB with the scrambling ability of Johnson and that could enable him to make some plays with his legs. Johnson has already rushed for 141 yards (6.7 yards per carry) since taking over the reigns. If he makes New England worthy about his running ability, things could really open up in the passing game.

Defensively, the Bucs are going to have to find a way to come up with some turnovers. New England loves to pass the football to Wes Welker and Randy Moss so Tampa Bay may have to take some gambles to pick off a couple passes. Since 2000, the Bucs have intercepted 192 passes, which is the second highest total in the league.  Perhaps, Aqib Talib, who already has three interception on the season, will be able to come up with a game-changing play this week.  It is definitely worth noting that the Patriots are just 1-11 against the spread in their last 12 games as a favorite of 10.5 or more points. If you think Tampa Bay has what it takes to keep this one within the number, bet the Buccaneers at +15 at Bookmaker.
