New Orleans Saints at Buffalo Bills NFL Week 3 Odds & Predictions
The 2-0 New Orleans Saints head north to take on the 1-1 Buffalo Bills this Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium in a Week 3 non-conference clash. The Saints too care of business in Philadelphia last week, crushing the Eagles 48-22 behind three touchdown strikes from Drew Brees while the Bills cruised to a 33-20 win over the Buccaneers. These teams have not met since 2005 when the Saints won an emotional home game in the Alamodome because Hurricane Katrina had kept them from playing in the Superdome. New Orleans has won three of the last five meetings, but the all-time series is knotted at four wins a piece. NFL odds makers expect New Orleans to remain unbeaten, listing the Saints as a 6-point favorite with the total set at 52.

The Saints are out of the gate fast with back-to-back blowout wins, becoming the first team since the 1968 Oakland Raiders to score 45 or more points in each of their first two games. Quarterback Drew Brees threatened the single-season record for passing yards in 2008 and he may threaten the single-season record for touchdowns in 2009. Brees already has nine touchdown passes through the first two games which is tied for the most in NFL history during that span. Brees has displayed pin-point accuracy and has spread the football around to 10 different receivers. The numbers and the touchdowns figure to keep piling up this week against a Buffalo defense that ranks 31st in the league against the pass.
Since the Saints made the NFC championship game a few years back, their defense has kept them from returning to the playoffs. Perhaps, New Orleans finally has a defense capable of making another postseason run thanks to acquisitions like Darren Sharper. The former Pro Bowl safety is known for laying the wood and also for his big play ability. Sharper has a fourth-quarter interception in each of the Saints’ first two games and you can bet he’ll be stalking Trent Edwards Sunday. If you like New Orleans to win in blowout fashion again Sunday, bet the Saints at -6 at Sportsbook.com.
Bills quarterback Trent Edwards is 7-6 at home as a starter in his career and he will be looking to improve on that number this week. While Buffalo’s defense, led by end Aaron Schobel, must apply pressure to Brees, the Saints offense is too good to think the Bills can completely shut it down. That’s why I think the Buffalo offense is the more important side of the football this week. Buffalo must run the football and hit on its short pass plays to march the ball down the field to burn clock. Keeping New Orleans off the field may be its best defense. Plus, while New Orleans’ defense appears improved, I’m not even close to sold that it is a dominant unit. It has faced the Lions and an Eagles team without Donovan McNabb. Fred Jackson figures to play a key role in Buffalo’s offense. He has rushed for 220 yards and has 108 yards receiving through two weeks. Using Jackson in the running game figures to set up a play action opportunity for Edwards over the top at some point. Look for Terrell Owens to be on the other end of it. His 110 touchdown catches since 2000 are the most in the NFL during that span. If you think Buffalo can keep this one close, bet the Bills at +6 at Sportsbook.com.
