New York Giants at Kansas City Chiefs NFL Week 4 Picks & Betting

Written by Jimmy Boyd

giants chiefs 93009The 3-0 New York Giants look to stay unbeaten when they visit the 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in a Week 4 non-conference clash. Last week, the Giants completely dominated Tampa Bay with a 24-0 shutout while the Chiefs were crushed 34-14 at Philly. These teams have not met since 2005 when the Giants rode a huge day from Tiki Barber to a 27-17 win. That victory improved New York to 6-1 in the last seven meetings and 9-2 in the all-time series. NFL odds makers expect New York’s dominance to continue, listing the Giants as 8.5-point favorites with the total set at 42.5.

Dating back to the 2000 season, Kansas City is 11-7 against NFC foes at home. If Kansas City has any hope of building on this solid streak it is going to have to play much better on the defensive front. Since 2001, the Chiefs have drafted 10 defensive lineman in the first three rounds, and they have especially looked to improve the defensive line over the last couple seasons by drafting a pair of LSU stars. However, these guys are yet to pan out. Last year, the Kansas City defense was awful, coming up with only 10 QB sacks and allowing 158.9 yards per game on the ground. So far in 2009, the unit has showed improvement, but not enough to make major strides. The Chiefs currently rank 25th in the NFL with three QB sacks and 19th in the league with 119.3 rushing yards allowed per game.

Offensively, it appears that the Chiefs are going to have to throw the football to move the chains as the offensive line hasn’t been able to open up much running room for Larry Johnson, who is averaging a career-low 2.5 yards per tote. That means that QB Matt Cassel, who has 331 yards and three touchdowns in two starts, is going to have to get the job done through the air. Wide receivers Mark Bradley and Dwayne Bowe will have to come up big for the Chiefs to pull off the upset this week. It is worth noting that the Chiefs are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven Week 4 contests. If you think Kansas City can keep this one within the number, bet the Chiefs at +8.5 at BetUS.

The Giants have high hopes of getting back to the Super Bowl and they are out to a 3-0 start for the second straight season, which is something they haven’t accomplished since 1993-94. New York made a big statement with its defense last week and it will look to make another one here. The New York secondary has already come up with five interceptions and the entire defensive unit ranks No. 1 in the NFL in defending the pass. With the Chiefs ground game struggling, New York will likely have plenty of opportunities to add to their interception total as Cassel is expected to hoist it up often. Cassel has thrown two interceptions in two starts this season. The biggest reason why the Giants are ranked No. 1 against the pass is because of their ferocious pass rush. In fact, the Giants have one nine straight games when Justin Tuck has come up with at least one sack.

Offensively, New York is ahead of schedule in my opinion. The wide receiver position was a bit of a question mark entering the season but Steve Smith and Mario Manningham are both off to great starts. It is worth noting that the Giants are 21-5 against the spread in their last 26 road games and the Chiefs are 0-5 against the number in their last five games following a loss of more than 14 points. If you like New York to post another blowout victory this week, bet the Giants at -8.5 at BetUS.
