New York Giants at Minnesota Vikings NFL Week 17 Odds & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 30, 2009

The 11-4 Minnesota Vikings have already clinched their second straight NFC North title, but they are killing their momentum heading into the postseason with losses in three of their last four games. The good news is they return home, where they are a perfect 7-0 this season, to face a New York Giants team that has been eliminated from the postseason. New York failed to keep its playoff hopes alive when it fell 41-9 to Carolina last week. Week 16 didn’t treat the Vikings well either as they went down to the struggling Bears in Chicago. These two teams last met in Week 17 last season with Minnesota needing a win to clinch the NFC North Division title and to make the playoffs. The Vikings were able to do so with a 20-19 victory. The Vikings have won the last three meetings against the G-Men and lead the all-time series 13-10. NFL lines makers have listed the Minnesota Vikings as a 9-point favorite with the total set at 47.5.

Odds makers expect the Vikings to bounce back strong this week, but they also expected them to last week when they were dominated by the Chicago Bears for most of the game. Minnesota certainly has some things to figure out if it doesn’t want to be one and done in the postseason. One thing it must do is open some holes for star running back Adrian Peterson. The Vikings have been at their best when they have been able to run the football to set up the pass, but they haven’t been able to run it very effectively lately. Peterson has failed to reach the century mark in six straight games now, and he has been held to an average of just 49 yards on three yards per carry in Minnesota’s three losses the last four weeks. Plus, ball security has been a developing issue with Peterson. He leads all running backs with six lost fumbles, with one of those being a costly one in overtime last week.

The Vikings also need to rediscover their pass rush. While they do lead the NFL with 45 sacks, their production has been way down over the last month. They have just five total sacks in their last four games, which has exposed their secondary. We saw Chicago’s no-name receivers run right by the corners time and time again like they weren’t even their last Monday night. While I like Minnesota’s chances at winning this game, its chances to cover the spread and to make a deep playoff run will greatly diminish if it doesn’t rediscover its running game and pass rush. It is worth noting that the Giants are on a 1-7 ATS slide versus teams with a winning record. If you like Minnesota to bounce back in a big way Sunday, bet the Vikings at -9 at BetUS.

The big question heading into this game is if New York will show up. It certainly didn’t show up at home last week against Carolina when it had every reason to. The Giants don’t have anything left to play for except pride as they will miss out on the postseason for the first time since 2004. If New York does show up, it may be able to take a page out of Chicago’s book and hurt the Vikings through the air. Wide receiver Steve Smith, who leads the NFC with 97 catches, could be poised for a big day. It is worth noting that the Giants are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a double-digit loss at home. If you like New York to show some pride and bounce back strong in Week 17, bet the Giants at +9 at BetUS.

    Dear Vikings,

First off allow me to say that I am a long time Viking fan. I started pulling for them after the 1968 play-offs. At the time I was a Colt fan and they played the Vikings in the first round and the Colts won 24-14. I was very impressed with the Vikings, especially the defense and became a fan the next season. I’ve lived and died with them down through the years. I firnly believe that we have a great chance of winning the Super Bowl this year.
The reason I’m writing is to suggest a pick for us in the up-coming draft. I suggest you take a long look at Amanti Edwards out of App State here in North Carolina. He has many weapons. He’s left handed and can either throw or run. He can throw on the run too. He’s another Mike Vick without the legal problems.
He led App State to three straight small college national championships. A problem the Vikes have had till this year is at quarterback. Farve can’t play forever, although it appears that he’s going to give it a go. Don’t get me wrong, Farve is great! He’ll be in the Hall of Fame some day.
Edwards would fit in great with out current running game and as I said the man can throw too.
Please give it some thought. No doubt you recieve e-mails like this every day, but I feel that we can’t go wrong with Edwards.

    Best Regards,
    Rick Hensley

Thanks for the nice post Rick. Your right. Edwards could end up being a steal. My only concern is that he is only listed at 5′11”, making it difficult to always see over the massive offensive and defensive fronts to make his reads. That will no doubt be a knock on him as teams start to evaluate him, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; you can either play or you can’t. Some teams will be willing to take a chance, and if he can’t make it as an every down signal caller in the NFL, he could certainly be valuable in the wildcat formation that is becoming so popular. Thanks again for the post and best to you as well.

I’ve been a Vikings fan six the seventies when John Gilliam played with the team in the position of wide receiver. John, a native of Greenwood, South Carolina, was the first high school player (Brewer High School) to be drafted to play professional football from Greenwood. I do think he iinspired others who followed him because they often marveled over his success ( Robert Brooks of Green Bay Packers, Larry Ryans of the Detroit Lions, Ernest Dye of the St. Louis Cardinals). As a Vikings receiver John was selected appear in the Pro Bowl several times and he even played in Super Bowl IX in New Orleans.

Hence, I too think that you seriously consider bringing Armanti Edwards aboard. I watched him play throughout both his high school and collegiate careers, and let me assure you that he is really “very good.” He is extremely quick, and he is an accurate “leftie.” He will always give you 100% plus. Also, he is gifted “academically” and he has excellent “work ethics.” Amanti, too, is from Greenwood, SC.

Got something to say?
