New York Jets at Buffalo Bills NFL Week 13 Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 2, 2009

The 5-6 New York Jets take on the 4-7 Buffalo Bills in an AFC East showdown to kick off Week 13 action on Thursday night. Last week, we finally saw the Rex Ryan defense that we were seeing early in the season and it earned the Jets a 17-6 win over Carolina. And we finally saw a little offense in Buffalo as the Bills crushed the Dolphins 31-14 behind a huge fourth quarter. These two division rivals have already met once this season with Buffalo winning 16-13 in overtime. It was a brutal game for Mark Sanchez, who was picked off five times in the defeat. With the win, Buffalo has taken four of the last six head-to-heads and owns a 53-44 advantage in the all-time series. NFL odds makers expect New York to have its revenge though, listing the Jets as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 37.

The Bills will try Canadian soil again in 2009 with hopes that it turns out better than it did last year. In Buffalo’s first game at the Rogers Centre in Toronto last season, it lost to the Miami Dolphins. But with momentum on its side and considering that the Jets are just 1-4 against the AFC East this season, perhaps the Buffalo can get the job done this time around.

Much the way Mike Singletary did for the 49ers last season, Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell has ignited his team. Former coach Dick Jauron’s demeanor never seemed to change no matter what the situation, but Fewell is a lot more fiery and the players have responded to it thus far. Fewell wasted no time naming Ryan Fitzpatrick the starting quarterback and he has made getting the ball to Terrell Owens a priority. Owens has averaged just under 43 receiving yards per game with Trent Edwards under center compared to just under 90 receiving yards per game in Fitzpatrick’s four starts. Fitzpatrick and Owens connected on a game-sealing touchdown against Miami last week and they figure to present a stiff challenge for Rex Ryan’s defense Thursday. It is worth noting that the Bills are on an impressive 26-10-1 ATS run versus a team with a losing record. If you like Buffalo to get the job done again this week, bet the Bills at +3 at Bodog.

If the Jets want to avenge their earlier season loss to the Bills, they’ll need a much better performance out of Mark Sanchez this time around. It’s safe to say that Sanchez had the worst game of his career against the Bills earlier this season and Buffalo still needed overtime to get the win. In that game, Sanchez was just 10 of 29 and was picked off five times. Buffalo does have a very opportunistic defense and that likely means that New York will lean more heavily on its running attack, which is among the best in the NFL, averaging 161 yards per game on 4.6 yards per carry. And those numbers are actually better on the road where the Jets average 176 yards per game on 4.9 yards per carry. It is worth noting that the Bills are just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win. If you like New York to have its revenge Thursday, bet the Jets at -3 at Bodog.
