New York Jets at Houston Texans NFL Spread & Predictions
The New York Jets, under new head coach Rex Ryan, head to Houston, Texas to take on the Texans in Reliant Stadium this Sunday. The Jets have posted three winning seasons in the last five years but will be looking to get back in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Meanwhile, the Texans will be looking to post their first winning season in team history after back-to-back 8-8 campaigns. History favors the Jets here as they lead the all-time series 3-0, but NFL lines makers think Houston is ready to end its winless streak against the Jets. The Houston Texans are listed as 5-point favorites with the total set at 43.5.

The big talk heading into this matchup is about No. 5 overall draft pick Mark Sanchez starting the season opener. Sanchez beat out Kellen Clemens and now Jets faithful are hoping that he can be the next Joe Namath. Sanchez had his ups and downs in the preseason, but the thing that impressed coach Ryan and his staff was his ability to bounce back from bad plays to make good ones. He has a chance to show well in this season opener against a Texans defense which was among the worst in the NFL last season. By best advice to the youngster is to know where Texans end Mario Williams is at all times. Williams hasn’t gotten a lot of help from his mates on the defense, but he has still been a thorn in the side of many QB’s. In fact, his 26 sacks the last two seasons are the most in the AFC during that span. My second best advice to Sanchez is to get the ball to Leon Washington. Washington set a franchise record with 2,337 total yards last season and Ryan has promised him more touches.
Rex Ryan had some great defenses in Baltimore, but now he won’t have as much talent to work with. He will need to find a way to get better results out of a unit that gave up over 24 points in the Jets last five contests in 2008. Not surprisingly, New York lost four of those games. One thing is for sure, Ryan will attack, but he does figure to have his hands full against one of the better offenses in the NFL in 2008. If you like New York to pull off the upset in Rex Ryan’s regular season debut, bet the Jets at +5 at BetUS.
Whether Houston is able to break through with its first winning season in franchise history largely depends on the health of QB Matt Schaub, who has missed considerable time each of the last two seasons. Unfortunately, Schaub enters the 2009 regular season already banged up with an ankle injury. While he is expected to go, if something were to change Rex Grossman would get the call. You have to like Houston’s chances if Schaub is healthy enough to play wekk as he has led Houston to six straight home wins. If you like Houston to get off to a good start, bet the Texans at -5 at BetUS.
