New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts NFL Picks & Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 26, 2009

The 7-7 New York Jets look to spoil the Colts’ perfect season Sunday in a Week 16 AFC battle. Last week, Indy rallied to defeat division rival Jacksonville 35-31 in a thriller while the Jets fell 10-7 to the Falcons. These two teams last met in the 2006 season when Indy won 31-28. The Jets and the Colts have split the last six meetings, but the Colts own a 40-27 lead in the all-time series. NFL odds makers expect Indy to get one step closer to an undefeated regular season, listing the Colts as 6-point favorites with the total set at 40.

The big question heading into this one is how much Indy’s starters will play. Tony Dungy used to rest his starters down the stretch when his team had already sealed its playoff fate, but Jim Caldwell played his top dogs last week. While the Colts have said that going 16-0 doesn’t matter to them, the way they kept fighting at Jacksonville would lead me to believe otherwise. I know you risk injury, but I think playing the starters is the way to go when you consider how flat the Colts have been in the playoffs with the exception of their Super Bowl season.

Offensively, the Colts are about as good as it gets, but their defense has been susceptible. A banged up secondary has been a big reason for their defensive deficiencies, but rookie defensive back Jacob Lacey provides hope. Lacey has played a big role in his first season, starting seven games, while learning on the job. He has come up with three interceptions on the year, and if he can continue to come up big, it will go a long way toward helping the Colts make a Super Bowl run. It is worth noting that the Colts are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and the home team is 7-2-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings. If you like Indy to stay unbeaten and cover the number in the process, bet the Colts at -6 at Bodog.

New York could easily be leading the AFC East. The Jets have lost four games that they were tied in or led with under two minutes to play this season. A big reason for those losses has been the ball security issues of rookie QB Mark Sanchez. Sanchez leads all quarterbacks in the AFC with 20 interceptions. The Jets own the NFL’s best defense and also its best rushing offense, but Sanchez has hurt them more than he has helped them in year number one, and that’s why they find themselves playing just .500 football. Sanchez must take care of the football this week to give his team its best possible shot at the win. It is worth noting that the Jets are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as a road underdog and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog of 3.5-10.0 points. If you like New York in the underdog role Sunday, bet the Jets at +6 at Bodog.
