New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts NFL Spreads & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on January 19, 2010

The New York Jets and the Indianapolis Colts are all set to meet this Sunday in the AFC Championship Game. Last week, the Jets’ No. 1 ranked defense looked the part in pulling off the upset over San Diego while the Colts continued their dominance over the Ravens. The Jets and Colts just met in Week 16 with the Jets winning 29-15 to keep their playoff hopes alive. That loss was the Colts first of the season, and one under scrutiny, as they decided to rest their starters in the second half. Indianapolis leads the all-time series 40-28, but the Jets have won both meetings in the playoffs, including Super Bowl III when Joe Namath guaranteed an upset. NFL odds makers have listed the Indianapolis Colts as a 7.5-point favorite with the total set at 39.

Just a few weeks back it didn’t even look like the Jets would be a playoff team. Now they are playing for a trip to the Super Bowl. The Jets have not played in a conference title game since the 1998-99 season when they fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.

The recipe for success seems simple enough for New York this week. It must continue to play exceptional defense, and it must be able to run the football to keep the pressure off rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez. The Jets have certainly lived up to their billing as the NFL’s No. 1 ranked rushing offense, but it has come with a slight twist. Rookie running back Shonn Greene, and not veteran Thomas Jones, is carrying the load. Greene hit the Bengals up for 135 yards in the wild card round, and then busted out for 128 more yards against the Chargers in the divisional round. Don’t be surprised if Jets head coach Rex Ryan decides to play the hot hand by getting Greene the bulk of the carries. He is the fresher back and teams have far less film on his tendencies.

Last week, New York’s defense was able to shut down San Diego’s soft running attack to force the Chargers into a lot of third-and-long situations. The Chargers ended up just four of 13 on third down, serving as a huge reason why the Jets were able to pull off the upset. Indy is the worst running team in the NFL so we figure to see more third-and-longs from the Colts this week. If New York can force Indy into punts the large majority of the time, it might just pull off another upset. It is worth noting that the Jets are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog. If you like New York in the underdog role Sunday, bet the Jets at +7.5 at BetUS.

A win by the Colts and they’ll be making their second trip to the Super Bowl in four years. And it just so happens that the site of this year’s Super Bowl is Miami, where the Colts won Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears.

For Indy to advance to the Super Bowl, it’s going to take a Hall of Fame performance from future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. Because the Colts don’t run the football well, it will be up to Manning to move the sticks with his right arm, just as he has all season long. Manning is coming off a 246-yard, two-touchdown, one interception performance against the Ravens, but I’m not sure a similar performance will be enough against the NFL’s No. 1 ranked pass defense. The Jets have confused Carson Palmer and Philip Rivers by showing them a variety of looks, but if anyone can figure out Ryan’s defense, it’s Manning. It is worth noting that the Colts are a perfect 4-0 ATS in their last 4 playoff games as a favorite of 3.5-10.0 points. If you like Indy to get back to the Super Bowl, while covering the spread in the process, bet the Colts at -7.5 at BetUS.

Jimmy Boyd is a perfect 4-0 his last four 5* Top Plays in this year’s NFL Playoffs after nailing his 5 Star NFL Playoffs Game of the Year on the Saints last week. Make sure you’re on board for Jimmy’s next huge 5 Star Play Sunday! Pick it up in Jimmy’s football picks package.

The majority of people are taking the Colts to kill the Jets this week but you have to consider how well New York matches up against Indy. Indy has the worst running game in the league, and is ALL Peyton. The Jets have the #1 pass-defence and if they can put the clamps on Peyton early… it could very well be a Jets win. TheCoach isn’t calling a J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS win but they will cover the spread. I know Indy shut down Baltimore’s running game last week but the Jets strive on being quick and elusive.. something Ray Rice isn’t…

Minnesota and New Orleans is going to be such a good game. I was hoping all season long these two would meet up in the NFC Championship and honestly.. either team could team this game. The Saints are -3.0 favourites and historically home team get given three points for the home-field advantage… so basically this game is a pick-em and there is ONE thing that I like about the Saints and its that home-field advantage. Last week Warner and Romo combined for 7 sacks and 4 fumbles largely in part to not being able to communicate with their offence. The SuperDome is NUTS and I don’t care how much experience Favre has, the crowd can help a team and also hurt the other so much.

Best of luck to all this week,
