New York Jets at Oakland Raiders NFL Picks & Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd on October 22, 2009

jets raiders 102209The 3-3 New York Jets make the cross country trip to take on the 2-4 Oakland Raiders at McAfee Coliseum this Sunday in a Week AFC showdown. Last week, it was more woes for Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez. He threw five interceptions in New York’s 16-13 overtime loss to the Bills. After getting crushed each of the last three weeks, the Raiders showed some life with a 13-9 upset over the Eagles. These teams last met last October with the Raiders prevailing 16-13 in overtime. They have split the last eight meetings, but the Raiders own a 22-16-2 lead in the all-time series. NFL odds makers have listed the New York Jets as a 6-point favorite with the total set at 34.5.

I expect a pretty conservative offensive approach from the Jets this week, which may mean they are in for another close game. But I’m sure Rex Ryan will take his chances winning with his defense before he lets Sanchez cost them with five interceptions again. New York was dominating the line of scrimmage against the Bills last week, racking up 318 yards on 40 carries (7.95 yards per carry). Thomas Jones picked up 210 of those yards for a career high. There was no need for Sanchez to throw the football 29 times last week with the way the Jets were able to run it at will. The Jets will have an opportunity to have another big day on the ground this week against the Raiders 28th ranked run defense. When the situation does call for Sanchez to throw, I expect the Jets to call as many safe routes as possible and to help him out with play-action. Hopefully, that will get his confidence back to the level it was at early in the season.

What do you think Rex Ryan is going to do on the defensive side of the football this week? Well, Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell has 10 turnovers on the season. That’s right. The whole purpose of Ryan’s aggressive defensive scheme is to force turnovers and I expect the Jets to come after Russell every chance they get. It is worth noting that the Raiders are only 15-35-1 against the spread in their last 51 home games. If you like New York to bounce back on the road this week and cover the number in the process, bet the Jets at -6 at BetUS.

The Raiders are 14-6-1 all-time at home versus the Jets and the Jets are just 1-3-1 against the number in their last five meetings at Oakland. It’s tough to play clear across the country as the Eagles found out last week. The biggest thing Oakland has to focus on is avoiding a letdown after such a big win.

The Raiders offense hasn’t been explosive yet this season and it doesn’t appear that it is going to be. That means the defense is going to have to come up big for them again this week. Oakland has struggled to stop the run, but they held the Eagles to just 67 yards on the ground and sacked Donovan McNabb six times. It is of the utmost importance that they stuff the run this week to force the Jets to put the game in the hands of the struggling Mark Sanchez. At that point, Raiders safety Michael Huff, who leads the AFC with three interceptions, will be waiting.

Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski was 2 of 2 on field goals last week to improve to 9 of 9 on all field goal attempts this season. Janikowski has long been known for his powerful leg, but accuracy has been an issue at times. Not this year. With as anemic as the Raiders offense has been, Janikowski’s leg has been their best offensive weapon. If Oakland can do the job defensively, Janikowski may be able to win it with his leg. It is worth noting that the Jets are 0-5 against the spread in their last five games as a favorite of 3.5-10.0 points. If you like Oakland to pull off another upset this week, bet the Raiders at +6 at BetUS.
