NFL Playoff Odds: Round 2

Written by Steve Janus

nfl-playoff-odds-010809Last week the favorites ruled the Wild Card Weekend playoff games for NFL betting fans.  The Indianapolis Colts were the only team that did not cover the spread as a favorite last weekend.  Is this weekend going to be different?  Is it time for the dogs to bite, or will the favored teams continue to roll?

Saturday’s first divisional game features the Baltimore Ravens at the Tennessee Titans.  According to the NFL odds, the Titans are a 3.5 point favorite over the Ravens in Tennessee.  These two squads did met once already in the regular season.  The Titans walked away with the victory in Baltimore as a one-point favorite, 13-10.  Tennessee went 7-1 at home this season, including an impressive 6-1-1 record against the spread.

The Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals also play on Saturday, with some striking similarities to the Ravens/Titans game.  Carolina and Arizona also met in the regular season with the Panthers walking away with a 27-23 win, but without covering the 5.5 point spread.  The Panthers are the biggest favorite of the weekend at -10.5 against the Cardinals.  Carolina was one of the best home teams in the league this year, earning an 8-0 record there, including a 5-1-1 record ATS.  Arizona, on the other hand, struggled all season on the road, going only 3-5 straight up and 4-4 ATS.

Sunday features some great NFL match ups as well.  First on the schedule is the Philadelphia Eagles at the New York Giants.  The Eagles and Giants met twice in the regular season, with each of them coming away with a road upset.  This Sunday, with the Giants at home, New York is a 4.5 point favorite.  Will history repeat itself, or will the Giants take another step toward repeating as NFL champions?

As the one underdog to win in the first round of the playoffs, the San Diego Chargers head to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers this Sunday night.  The Steelers won their regular season meeting 11-10, but did not score a touchdown and did not cover the 4.5 point spread.  With that being said, if you remember, this was the game where Pitt picked up a fumble near the end of regulation and returned it for a touchdown, which was inexplicibly called back.  This time around the Steelers are 6.5 point favorites over the Chargers in Pittsburgh.

This weekend, when you are making your NFL picks, keep in mind that teams are usually favored for a reason, but that oddsmakers are also counting on the public overestimating favorites in the NFL.  That obviously did not work in the first round of the playoffs, but I would not be surprised if the underdogs bite back in round two!
