NFL Power Rankings: Week 15

Written by Steve Janus

With the Giants’ loss to the Eagles last week, the Tennessee Titans regain the top spot in our NFL Power Rankings for Week 15.  The Titans’ last two weeks against the Lions and then the Browns weren’t very difficult and this week’s game at Houston should earn the Titans their 13th win of the season.

The New York Giants lost their first home game of the season to the resurgent Philadelphia Eagles.  Luckily for them, they’ve already sealed up the NFC East division title.  This week the Giants play at Dallas as 3 point underdogs.

The Steelers have the best defense in the NFL, but they’ll need some production from their offense if they want advance in the playoffs this year.  Pittsburgh has a gritty game this week at Baltimore against the Ravens.  The Steelers are 2 point underdogs.

Monday Night Football last week featured a huge win by the Carolina Panthers, who now are in position to take the NFC South.  The Panthers are currently the best team in the league at home with a 7-0 record on the year.  The week they play the Denver Broncos in Carolina.

The Colts finally looked like the Colts last week in a 35-3 destruction of the Bengals.  They’ll have games against Detroit (0-13) and Jacksonville (4-9) before a showdown with the Titans.  After a 3-4 start to the season, the Colts are poised to end up with at least 11 wins.  Not bad.

The Baltimore Ravens have won 3 games in a row and 7 of their last 8.  Two of their 4 losses against Pittsburgh and Tennessee, both by just a field goal.  They’ll have a chance to revenge one of those losses in Baltimore against the Steelers this week.  Baltimore is favored by 2 at home against Pittsburgh.

With a loss to the Panthers on Monday Night Football, the Tampa Bay Bucs are down, but not out in the NFC South race.  They’ll face the Falcons in Atlanta this Sunday for another divisional showdown.

The Cowboy’s defense finally showed up last week against the Steelers, but the usually-potent offense was nowhere to be found.  This week in Dallas they have a chance to avenge a Week 9 loss to the Giants and help to solidify their Wild Card ranking.

With their win last week over the St. Louis Rams, the Arizona Cardinals clinched the NFC West title and a spot in the playoffs.  Now they have their sights set on the Vikings for the 3rd seed in the NFC playoffs.

Last week wasn’t pretty for the New England Patriots, but they still pulled out their 8th victory of the season over Seattle.  They stay on the West Coast this week to play the Oakland Raiders.  A win here keeps them in the thick of things in the AFC Wildcard race.

The Eagles scored a win over the New York Giants last week, just when they needed it most.  They are still very much in the mix for the last playoff spot in the NFC.  They play on Monday Night Football this week against the Browns.

After the Falcons lost to New Orleans last Sunday, they lost some ground as far as the NFC South title was concerned, but they are still in pretty good shape as far as the Wild Card.  They play this week against Tampa Bay in Atlanta in a big game for both teams.  The Falcons are 3 point favorites over the Bucs.

As the only team to beat the Tennessee Titans this year, the Jets looked well on their way to the AFC East title, but two straight losses (to the 49ers and Broncos, no less) have put a divisional championship in question.  The playoffs are no guarantee at this point either.  They’ll try to get back on track this week at home against Buffalo.

The Minnesota Vikings can clinch the NFC North this week with a win over the Arizona Cardinals.  They’ll have to do it in Arizona, however, and likely without two of their best defensive players.

Still in the playoff hunt: Miami Dolphins (8-5), Denver Broncos (8-5), Buffalo Bills (6-7), San Diego Chargers (5-8), Washington Redskins (7-6), Chicago Bears (7-6), New Orleans Saints (7-6), Green Bay Packers (5-8)

Better luck next year: Houston Texans (6-7), San Francisco 49ers (5-8), Cleveland Browns (4-9), Jacksonville Jags (4-9), Oakland Raiders (3-10), Seattle Seahawks (2-11), St. Louis Rams (2-11), Kansas City Chiefs (2-11), Cincinnati Bengals (1-11-1), Detroit Lions (0-13)
