NFL Power Rankings: Week 16
The Tennessee Titans at 12-2 have the best record in the NFL. Even though they lost last week at Houston, they’ve still looked like the best overall team in the league on the season. Their game against Pittsburgh, without Albert Haynesworth or Kyle Vanden Bosch, will say more about this team than any of their previous contests. The Titans are 2 point underdogs against the Steelers this Sunday.
On Sunday night the Pittsburgh Steelers walked away with a huge victory against the Ravens in Baltimore. Their offense is still far from elite, but the defense is still the tops in the league. Their clash with the Titans this week might be the best match up of the NFL season.
Carolina was again impressive at home last week making quick work of the Denver Broncos. The Panthers have a strong running game and a tenacious defense. Trust me, nobody wants to play them right now, least of all the Giants (who they play this week) who desperately need to get back on track after dropping two straight.
The New York Giants are still technically in the poll position in the NFC, but that could all change this week against the Carolina Panthers. Luckily they get Carolina on their home field, but after their debacle against the Cowboys last week, the Giants all of the sudden don’t have their defending-champion swagger. Oddsmakers have the Giants -3 over the Panthers.
A win over the Lions gave the Colts their 7th in a row. While that win isn’t impressive, wins over Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and New England this year are. Indy will try to make it 8 in a row against the Jacksonville Jaguars this week on Thursday night.
The Cowboys finally put it all together last week against the Giants. The defense looked great and the offense easily cut up the Giants’ usually-sturdy defense. The off-the-field problems are still distracting, but they could still be dangerous in the playoffs. They play their last game ever at Texas Stadium against the Ravens this Saturday.
The Ravens lost a tough, close game against the Steelers last week. Baltimore was in control of the game until Pittsburgh’s final drive. If the Ravens could have turned the turnovers they created into more than just field goals, that drive would have been meaningless.
The Falcons, despite many mistakes, still walked away with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend. Splitting their series with the Bucs helps their playoff chances, but they still need Tampa or Dallas to lose to move up in the Wild Card standings. This is a big week for them and their opponents, the Minnesota Vikings, in the NFC playoff picture. Atlanta is a 3 point underdog at Minnesota this week.
Despite being a bit inconsistent, the New England Patriots are still alive in the AFC playoff race. They need the Dolphins and the Ravens stumble if they don’t want to be left sitting at home for the playoffs.
The Dolphins refuse to give up and they could still find themselves winning the AFC East this year. That’s quite an accomplishment after their one-win season in 2007.
In the playoff picture: Minnesota Vikings (9-5), New York Jets (9-5), Denver Broncos (8-6), Arizona Cardinals (8-6), Tampa Bay Bucs (9-5), Philadelphia Eagels (8-5-1), Chicago Bears (8-6), Washington Redskins (7-7), San Diego Chargers (6-8).
Better luck next year: Houston Texans (7-7), New Orleans Saints (7-7), Buffalo Bills (6-8), Green Bay Packers (5-9), Jacksonville Jaguars (5-9), San Francisco 49ers (5-9), Cleveland Browns (4-10), Oakland Raiders (3-11), Seattle Seahawks (3-11), Cincinnati Bengals (2-11-1), St. Louis Rams (2-12), Kansas City Chiefs (2-12), Detroit Lions (0-14)
