NFL Power Rankings: Week 14

Written by Steve Janus

The Giants seemed unfazed by the Plaxico Burress incident.  They breezed past the Redskins in Washington last week and remain the best team in the NFL as of this week.  This week the Giants face the Eagles in New York as 6.5 point favorites.

The Titans rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 47-10 destruction of the Detroit Lions.  Nothing like beating up on the worst team in the NFL to get some of your confidence back.

After defeating the Patriots on the road last week the Pittsburgh Steelers showed that they really mean business.  They still haven’t allowed over 300 yards of total offense to any one team through 12 games.  Scary.  This week they play Dallas in Pittsburgh.  The Steelers are 3 point favorites.

People are finally starting to notice how good Tampa Bay is.  Their defense is stellar and their offense always finds a way to rise to the occasion.  This week they have a super showdown at Carolina on Monday Night Football.

The Panthers squeaked away with a win at Green Bay last week, improving to 9-3 on the season.  They’ll have a season-defining type game on Monday night against the Buccaneers.

Did you catch the Falcons play the Chargers in San Diego last week?  I know the Chargers have been struggling, but Matt Ryan looked superb and the Falcons’ defense played very well.  There’s no fluke in Atlanta, this team could be very dangerous come playoff time, if they can find a way to make it to the playoffs, that is.

The Colts haven’t been pretty this year, but they do keep winning close games.  They play back to back home games; against Cincinnati this week and Detroit next week.  Thank you, NFL schedule-makers!

The Ravens are still fighting to get into the postseason, but they have the defense to do it.  The Ravens’ only losses are against the Steelers, Titans, Colts, and Giants.  This week at home against the Redskins should be an excellent test of where this team is headed.

Just when you think that the Jets are the team to beat in the AFC, they turn in a 17 point loss at home against Denver.  They’ll still make the playoffs though.  Their remaining schedule features the 49ers, Bills, Seattle, and Miami.  They should get back on track this week at San Francisco as 3.5 point favorites.

The Cowboys have looked good against some pretty marginal opponents lately.  Let’s see how they handle the first few of their remaining four games against the Steelers, Giants, Ravens, and Eagles before getting too excited about Dallas.

The Patriots are still good, they just aren’t THAT good anymore.

Arizona will lock up a playoff spot and a division title sooner than later, most likely this week at home against the Rams.

The Redskins need a win this week against Baltimore or their playoff hopes may be over.

You never know which Denver team you are going to get.  The one that beats the Jets by 17 on their home field, or the team that loses by 21 at home against the 3-9 Oakland Raiders.  The Broncos will be in the playoffs, but it would be surprising if they made it out of the first round.

The Vikings are currently in first place in the NFC East, however, with all star defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams out due to doping violations, Minnesota’s future in uncertain.  They do get the Lions in Detroit this week, but we’re talking about a major blow to this defense.

On the bubble: Dolphins (7-5), Saints (6-6), Eagles (6-5-1), Bears (6-6), Packers (5-7), Bills (6-6), Texans (5-7)

The bottom of the barrel: Chargers (4-8), Jags (4-8), 49ers (4-8), Browns (4-8), Chiefs (2-10), Seahawks (2-10), Raiders (3-9), Bengals (1-10-1), Rams (2-10), Lions (0-12)
