NFL Preseason Handicapping

Written by Jimmy Boyd

I love it when August gets here, because that means that football is right around the corner. Jimmy Boyd and his Locksmith Sports staff are known as one of the best NFL handicapping services in the nation, and with as much hard work as they have been doing their preparation in studying the teams all summer long, in cranking out their NFL predictions articles on each and every team, it’s no wonder that their NFL picks hit at such a high rate compared to most. This article is meant to help you guide your way through the exhibition season, as NFL preseason handicapping is a little different beast than with the regular season or playoffs.

The first thing that most people should know about betting on the NFL preseason is that you should pick your spots wisely. If there is only one game per week that shows value, then that is the only game that you should play. We put out quite a few games every Sunday during the regular season, but might take a pass for the week on our NFL preseason picks if there is nothing of value showing on the board in August. If you are looking for action this month in order to build your bankroll up for the real deal, then do it with baseball betting.

Remember that the coaches and players don’t have wins and losses on their minds during this time of year so that means the games are subject to a lot more intangibles than would otherwise be involved. This means that you are going to have some great, close wins and some tough losses so make sure you have the stomach to handle it. It also means that we don’t feel as comfortable putting our money at stake unless we really know that the game is showing some value and we won’t force anything. Unlike some NFL handicappers, Jimmy and the guys on this site want to help you grow your bankroll first and foremost, knowing that it’s a long term relationship that we are building. That means that we will be patient and wait for the best chances to beat the books. Now with that being said, take a look at some tips and trends to look for during the exhibition season:

If a team has lost their first two games in the NFL presason, those teams win and cover 60% of the time in their third game. This trend has held steady over the last 22 years of NFL exhibition games. Sooner or later, the coaches and players want to remember what it feels like to leave the field a winner. The third game of the year is when the coaches want to make things more formal and you’ll see starters out on the field for three quarters of action, leaving these games similar to the regular season. The players that are still getting playing time will want to put their best effort out in order to ensure a spot on the team, and they aren’t as rusty since they will have played in two previous games and shouldn’t be making the same kinds of mistakes. For more NFL preseason betting systems read this article.

We also like to concentrate on the quarterback position. If there is a fight to be the starter then you’ll see good quarterbacks who will be playing with second and third stringers late in the game. They will be trying to make big plays and taking chances with weaker talent on the field than they are used to working with, which will mean more turnovers and more points for the other team.

The last games of the preseason are the best to avoid. The starters will be playing only a couple of series as coaches don’t want to see them going down to injuries when the regular season is so close. The backups will be going through the motions here and any spots still up for grabs will be weak players.

Just remember, bet with caution during the preseason as there are plenty of tickets to cash when the real games get here!
