NFL Preseason Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

preseason predictionsWith the NFL Preseason now within spitting distance, I thought I would take the time to tell you guys how I like each division to shake out this season. I have listed several of the NFL odds to win the divisions below and you can check them all out at BetUS, where our readers who sign up for a new account are eligible for a special $500 match bonus.

NFC East – I like the Philadelphia Eagles to win a tough NFC East Division in 2009 and they are showing solid value +210. They have more offensive weapons than New York and Donovan McNabb has regained his swagger. The Giants will remain strong and are my pick to finish second. T.O. is out so Dallas can no longer point to him as a crutch. Tony Romo has struggled late in the season, though, so I have Big “D” finishing a close third and in wild card contention. The Redskins have plenty of talent, but they find the basement in the NFC’s toughest division.

NFC North – With Brett Favre not expected to be in a Minnesota Vikings uniform at the start of the season, I like the Chicago Bears to pull out the North with the addition of Jay Cutler. The Vikings will be breathing down Chicago’s neck, though, and will be in the running for a wild card slot. The Green Bay offense will remain strong with Aaron Rodgers emerging into a star signal caller, but the defense has to prove it can be better (the switch to the 3-4 could produce growing pains early on). The Lions, of course, bring up the rear.

NFC South – The Saints can sure move the chains with Drew Brees slinging the pigskin, but it’s hard to pick them to win the division when the defense continues to struggle. I like the Carolina Panthers to repeat as division champs and they are showing solid value at +230 to do so. They are the most consistent team in this division on both sides of the football. Matt Ryan and the Falcons prove that they are going to be good in the South for years to come with a second place finish and the Bucs will find the cellar in what is a rebuilding year in Tampa.

NFC West – The Arizona Cardinals have the most talent in the West and making a Super Bowl run did wonders for their confidence. I like them out West with the 49ers coming in second as Mike Singletary continues to rally the troops. The days of Seattle ruling this division appear to be over, but a healthy Matt Hasselbeck will keep them a lot more competitive this season. The Rams still have a lot of work to do and will bring up the rear.

AFC East - The Pats went 11-5 without Tom Terrific last season and they should reclaim the top spot in the East with him. Miami made significant strides in 2008 and I expect an improved offense to help them pin down second place. T.O. usually plays pretty well in his first season in a new city, but Trent Edwards is probably the least talented QB he’s played with so I can’t see those two hitting it off. I have the Jets coming in last unless one of their quarterbacks really surprises.

AFC North – The reigning Super Bowl champion Steelers should be the elite in the AFC North with the most talent on both sides of the ball in the division. The Baltimore Ravens will remain tough enough defensively to take second place while the Bengals and the Browns still have plenty of concerns to address before challenging the two top tier teams in the North.

AFC South – The Titans edged out the Colts last season to end their run of consecutive division titles, but I like Indy to reclaim the top spot. Peyton Manning will enter the season healthier than he was in 2008 and the team will be out to prove that a new coach won’t set them back. The Titans will likely come back down to earth a bit but should still take second place and a wild card spot. This could be the year the Texans finally post a winning record and they should take third place with the Jags close behind.

AFC West - I’m big on the Bolts this season and odds makers have it right that they should run away with the West with a double-digit win season. The Broncos, Raiders, and Chiefs all must adjust to major changes and will likely finish below .500.
