2009 Super Bowl Odds: Looking Back
It’s been a crazy NFL betting season this year and the playoffs have been no exception! With long-shot teams like the Arizona Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles both playing for the Super Bowl this season, it got me thinking. What chance did NFL odds makers give these teams to win the Super Bowl at the beginning of the season? It’s easy to set odds for teams like the Patriots and Giants before the season starts because they played in the Super Bowl just last year, but what about the remaining teams in the playoffs? Before looking at the odds I guessed that the Eagles, Cardinals, and Ravens would be considered long-shots (40 to 1 or more) and that the Steelers would be one of the favored teams to win the Super Bowl.
Luckily for me, BetUs.com has provided their odds for who would will win this season’s Super Bowl before the start of the 2008 NFL season. Let’s see how their (and my) predictions went. There are also some other cool props that you can take a look back at as far as conference champions and win totals for each team.

Now I’m not really suprised that the Arizona Cardinals were 50 to 1 shots before the start of the season, but the Ravens at 60 to 1?! I guess hindsight is 20/20 as they were bringing in a new coach and were supposed to be grooming a rookie quarterback. I was also a little surprised about the Steelers being at 20 to 1. Knowing that they have such a great defense, and always seem to do well in the playoffs, I would have guessed they would be one of the favorites to win it all this year. Then again, it’s really easy to say all of this know, having watched an entire season! I will have to be sure to put out my predictions for next year after this year’s Super Bowl and see if I can do any better. In fact, why don’t you do the same right now?
