North Carolina Could Miss Big Dance
The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team is like the USC Trojans football team with the way it reloads year after year. But something must be in the water of national powerhouses this year as USC didn’t win the Pac-10 and play in a BCS bowl and UNC may not even make the NCAA Tournament.
Just one season removed from winning a national title, North Carolina is in danger of missing the Big Dance for the first time since the 2002-03 season and just the third time since the 1973-74 season. The Tar Heels are currently just 13-10 overall and 2-6 in ACC play.
While there are many teams across the country that would take a 13-10 mark at this point, this is the Tar Heels – one of the most storied programs in college basketball history. What’s even worse is their abrupt collapse, having lost 6 of their last 7 games after starting the season a promising 11-3 with wins over Michigan State and Ohio State. They even played No. 3 Kentucky to a two-point game.
If North Carolina is going to make the field of 64, they better start building their resume. They could start win a win over rival Duke Wednesday, who is currently atop the ACC and is ranked No. 4 in the country in terms of the RPI.
