North Carolina vs Georgia Tech Football Predictions & Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd

This Saturday two ranked ACC teams clash as the North Carolina Tarheels play host to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.  Both teams have been a pleasant surprise this year with only two losses and both have slipped into the top 25 rankings.  Tech has won five of their last six games overall and the Tarheels have won four of their last five.  You wouldn’t have thought it before the season started, but this is one of the best ACC match ups of the year.  Bookmaker.com thinks this game will be decided by less than a touchdown, they’ve set North Carolina as 4 point favorites over Georgia Tech with a total of 44 points.

Georgia Tech is one of the few teams in Division I Football that has adopted the wishbone offense, but they’ve been able to use it very successfully.  The Yellow Jackets run the ball almost every single play, so you would think that opponents would just shove as many guys in the box to stop them and the wishbone experiment would be over.  That hasn’t been the case however, as Tech has managed to rack up over 240 yards per game on the round.  The Jackets aren’t going to wow anyone with their game plan, but they are successful at what they do and they have been vaulted into the top 25 with their impressive play.

Defensively Georgia Tech really shines.  They are allowing just 14.8 points per game an a mere 284 yards per game.  The rush defense gets a lot of the credit for this success, they are allowing only about 3 yards per carry by opposing running backs.  Another reason this team has been so successful this year has been the defense’s abilty to create turnovers.  With 15 interceptions this year, Tech’s defense is give their offense plenty of extra opportunities to put points on the board.  The Yellow Jackets are 4 point underdogs, but they have a great chance to upset the Tarheels.

Known mostly for their long and successful tradition of basketball, the North Carolina Tarheels’ football program is starting to make a name for itself as well.  Once the doormat of the ACC, Carolina has managed to improve year after year and have even earned top 25 ranking this season, coming in at number 19 in the nation.  A very large part of the success comes from the offense’s ability to put points on the board through the air and on the ground.  With nearly a dead-even split between the two (12 passing, 13 rushing) you can see how this team has put up over 30 points per game.  They aren’t racking up massive amounts of yardage, particularly on the ground, but they are getting the job done, and that’s translated into wins for this football team.

North Carolina’s defense is nearly as good as Tech’s.  So far this season they are allowing just under 20 points per game on 340 total yards on average.  They are keeping opponents under 5 yards per rush and also under 10 yards per pass completion, so it’s hard to find the weakness on the defensive side of the ball.  UNC’s rush defense will be put to the test this week with the run-first mentality of the Yellow Jackets, but if the numbers are any indication, it looks like they are up for the task.  If you want to bet on North Carolina, the best line on the game is the Tarheels -3.5 over at Sportsbook.com.

Saturday’s big ACC match up looks like a toss up.  You’ll have to give a slight edge to North Carolina simply because they are playing at home, but if you are looking strictly at the numbers, Georgia Tech is probably the better team.  There shouldn’t be a ton of scoring and I would expect both teams to try to control the clock.
