2011 Odds to Win the Kentucky Derby

Written by -

The first Saturday in May is still two weeks off but there’s no time like the present to start breaking down contenders and analyzing this year’s Kentucky Derby betting odds.

As the big race nears, we find that this year’s derby could be more wide open than any we have seen in recent years. But that hasn’t stopped me from wading through the muddy waters in an attempt to bring some clarity to this year’s Run for the Roses. Here’s a list of some of this year’s top contenders along with the odds associated with them winning the 2011 Kentucky Derby.

1. Uncle Mo: +250 to win the Kentucky Derby – At this price, Uncle Mo is overvalued. The two-year-old champ, yes, but the Wood Memorial disaster can’t be overlooked. Uncle Mo ran out of gas and finished third, raising major questions about whether he can handle the Derby distance.

2. Dialed In: +400 to win the Kentucky Derby – Don’t be surprised if Dialed In emerges as the favorite after winning the Florida Derby, especially since he doesn’t mind running on the dirt at Churchill Downs. After all, that’s where he broke his maiden. He would not be the definition of a strong Derby favorite, though. A head-scratching performance in an allowance race prior to the Florida Derby raises questions about consistency.

3. Nehro: +700 to win the Kentucky Derby – Nehro hasn’t won a major prep race but that won’t deter me from using him in my boxes. He finished second in both the Louisiana and Arkansas Derby’s and appeared to have plenty left when he crossed the finish line in both races. This means he could do well in this longer race.

4. Archarcharch: +800 to win the Kentucky Derby – Some are calling Archarcharch’s Arkansas Derby victory a fluke. I won’t go that far, considering he also performed well with a win at the Southwest. Still, jockey Jon Court is expected to get the mount and he’s never made a Derby start. I like experienced jockey’s in this race, which may keep me from investing in this pony.

5. Midnight Interlude: +2200 to win the Kentucky Derby – Now this is the type of bang for the buck I like to see with a Derby contender. Midnight Interlude shocked some folks when he won the Santa Anita Derby. I haven’t put a ton of stock in Santa Anita Derby winners in the past but that goes out the window now that the race is run on a dirt. I also like the fact that this pony comes from Bob Baffert’s stable.
