Odds to Win 2008 NFL Rookie of the Year

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 8, 2008

Last season Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson, literally, ran away with the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Sportsbook.com lists 2008 Offensive Rookie of the Year odds with Oakland’s Darren McFadden listed as the +300 favorite. While some are already penciling in McFadden, Jimmy Boyd takes a look at some other promising betting options in this NFL rookie predictions article and gives you one sleeper that oddsmakers have heavily undervalued.

Darren McFadden: +300 to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

McFadden enter the NFL with a fresh set of legs as he was not overworked at Arkansas. Similarities between he and Adrian Peterson are uncanny and McFadden could prove to be even better since he doesn’t have the same injury-plagued past as Peterson. This kid is versatile and has the speed to go the distance if you give him an inch. He’ll be tested in the blocking game as he has never been asked to pass protect, but any deficiencies there would not keep him from winning the award.

Felix Jones: +800 to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Jones has been a bit overshadowed having played next to McFadden at Arkansas, but he may be hitting his stride at the right time. He should have a chance to star at Dallas in year one and won’t be keyed on as much as McFadden because of all of the other Dallas weapons. He has great speed and may have the best hands of any running back entering the NFL this season. If Dallas uses him in the kick return game as well, it only helps his chances of winning the award.

Jonathan Stewart: +600 to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Also among the favorites is Oregon tailback Jonathan Stewart. The Carolina Panthers were rated by nearly every major publication as having one of the best drafts in the NFL this year and Stewart is a big reason why. Carolina grabbed him with the 13th overall pick and he figures to fit seamlessly into its two-back system, running along side DeAngelo Williams. There was no tougher runner in this year’s draft.

Rashard Mendenhall: +800 to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Like Jonathan Stewart, who will be aiding DeAngelo Williams, Mendenhall is expected to step right in and run alongside Willie Parker in his first season. This kid’s stock rose a ton last season to move ahead of several other heralded backs. He can run over you and around you and has the work ethic to succeed.

Limas Sweed: +2500 to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

With a guy like Ben Roethlisberger slinging the rock to you, Sweed could be the sleeper to win this award. In fact, I feel as if he is being heavily undervalued by the books. Many thought his last season with the Longhorns to be a so-so year, but his stock soared with one sensational workout after another. He’s big at 6′4” and strong too. A defensive backs worst nightmare.
