Oklahoma State v. Georgia Football Predictions & Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd

osu 9109The No. 13 ranked Georgia Bulldogs take on the No. 9 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater,Oklahoma on Saturday, September 5th at 3:30 pm EST on ABC. Georgia began last season as the No. 1 ranked team in the country behind stars Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, but now they start off the 2009 season in the underdog role without those two key players. Georgia leads the all-time series 3-to-0, with the last meeting being a 35-14 win in 2007, but football odds makers have listed the Oklahoma State Cowboys as the 5-point favorite with the total set at 61.

While the Dawgs don’t figure to be quite as talented at the skill positions, an experienced offensive line which returns eight players with starting experience figures to keep Georgia a team to be reckoned with. The guy up front to watch is left tackle Trinton Sturdivant, who returns from a knee injury that kept him out all of last season. He was spectacular in 2007 and will be a main component in protecting new starting quarterback Joe Cox. It’s tough to replace a running back of the caliber of Knowshon Moreno and that’s why the Dawgs won’t do it with one guy. Expect a running-back-by-committee approach this season, riding the hot hand when necessary. As of this week Richard Samuel appears to be the top back because of Caleb King’s hamstring issues.

While the Bulldogs still possess plenty of talent, especially with wide receiver A.J. Green, they do not have the fire power that Oklahoma State has. That means that Georgia will likely elect to play a more conservative football game geared toward running the football to limit turnovers and to run clock. I can’t imagine Georgia asking Cox to win this one through the air in just his second career start. When the Dawgs do get the Cowboys stacking the box, A.J. Green, who’s coming off a 963-yard, eight-touchdown season will be the primary target.

If Georgia is going to win this football game, the defense is going to have to come up big on the road against the explosive Cowboys. Tackle Geno Atkins figures to play a huge part in Georgia’s success following a season in which he had 32 QB hurries. The team also figures to get a boost from the return of tackle Jeff Owens, who missed last season with a knee injury. If you think the Bulldogs have what it takes to pull off the upset, bet Georgia at +5 at Sportsbook.com.

The Cowboys have plenty of offensive weapons, but when it’s all said and done, they will likely only go as far as quarterback Zac Robinson can take them. Robinson completed 65 percent of his passes last season on his way to 3,064 passing yards and another 562 yards on the ground. In all, the star QB accounted for 33 touchdowns. The good news is that he will have help. The Oklahoma State running game ranked eighth nationally in 2008, averaging 245.5 yards per game, behind star tailback Kendall Hunter. Hunter racked up 1,555 yards and 16 scores on the ground last season. In all the Cowboys pose a very balanced offensive attack that is tough to stop.

The defense is the side of the football that will make or break the Cowboys in 2009. It will have to be up to the task to defeat a Georgia team that is 30-4 in true road games under Mark Richt. The key will be to mount a better pass rush. The Cowboys did not get to the QB last season, but new coordinator Bill Young has made pressuring the QB a priority. How Cox handles Oklahoma State’s pressure figures to be a big factor in this game. If you like the Cowboys to hold serve at home, bet Oklahoma State at -5 at Sportsbook.com.

Craig Trapp has a free play up on this game and he says to take Oklahoma State -5.5 over Georgia.
