Texas v. Oklahoma Football Betting Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd

The best matchup in college football thus far goes down this Saturday in the form of the Red River Rivalry when the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners go toe-to-toe in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Odds makers have stayed true to the polls by making Oklahoma 6.5-point favorites with the total set at 56.

The Sooners have moved up the ranking as other top teams have dropped off like flies and have held strong atop the charts the past two weeks. Last week’s 49-17 rout of Baylor was just another day at the office for Bob Stoops’ squad.

The Oklahoma offense has been lethal this season with Heisman Trophy candidate QB Sam Bradford leading the charge. The Sooners are averaging 49.6 point per game with Bradford having much to do with that gaudy number. Bradford boasts an off-the-charts 204.97 passer rating, completing 72.6 percent of his passes for 1,665 yards and 18 touchdowns against just three interceptions. Bradford was sensational as a freshman and has actually been able to raise his game. Wideouts Manuel Johnson, Juaquin Iglesias and Jermaine Gresham make his job relatively easy.

The Sooners can run the ball as well, sometimes at will, and are averaging 179 yards per game on the ground thus far. Tailbacks DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown both average right around the 5 yards per carry mark and have combined for 11 touchdowns.

The Oklahoma defense has had to take a back seat to all the attention the offense gets, but it’ll continue to fly under the radar and do its job. The Sooners are allowing only 13.8 ppg and where Texas could be in trouble is its passing game, as the Sooners are only allowing 159 yards per game through the air. With 42 tackles for loss and 17 sacks through fives games, teams are having trouble keeping the Sooners out of the backfield. If you think the Sooners will protect their No. 1 ranking this week and cover the spread in the process, bet Oklahoma at Bookmaker.

The fifth nationally ranked Longhorns know they need to beat Oklahoma this week if they want a chance at the Big 12 South crown. Mack Brown’s team is off to a 5-0 start and got right down to business in its Big 12 opener with a 38-14 win over Colorado.

While Texas holds a 57-40-5 edge in the all-time series, Oklahoma has taken seven of the last 12. The Sooners have also won seven of eight games in this series when they have come in as the No. 1 ranked team in the land.

The Texas offense has bit every bit as potent as Oklahoma’s averaging 47.2 points per game and gaining 198 yards per game on the ground and adding 273.8 yards per game through the air.

QB Colt McCoy has been running the show. He has completed nearly 80 percent of his throws for 1,280 yards and 16 touchdowns against just three interceptions. He has also been showing off his athletic ability as the team’s top rusher with four more scores on the ground and a 7 yards per rush average.

Wide receivers Quan Cosby and Jordan Shipley have been the big guns thus far, combining for nearly 800 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Defensively, Texas is yet to allow a rushing touchdown and is limiting its opponents to just 51.8 yards rushing per game. The pass defense has been a little bit more forgiving and that has to cause some concern in Longhorns camp with the best passer in the nation going at them. Texas is giving up 244 yards per game through the air. However, Bradford will have to be on the lookout for the talented Brian Orakpo, who has six sacks and 19 stops on the year.

This has all the makings of one of the best games of the season and if you think the Horns can pull off the upset, bet Texas at +6.5 at Bookmaker.
