Ole Miss at LSU Football Odds & Picks

Written by Steve Janus on November 20, 2008

Two very good SEC teams clash this weekend as the Ole Miss Rebels square off with the LSU Tigers.  Ole Miss has won three in a row and has looked very good against a tough SEC schedule.  LSU, on the other hand, has looked flat at times this season, including last week when the Tigers needed a miracle to get past Troy.  The Rebs are the only team to beat Florida this season, and while the win was early on, it still shows how dangerous this team can be.  LSU desperately needs a win to stay in the hunt for solid bowl consideration.  LSU is currently a 3.5 point favorite over Ole Miss with the total set at 54.5 points.

Ole Miss is nothing if not consistent on offense.  The Rebels don’t have any huge standouts to mention, but they’ve put together 29 points per game on 391 yards of total offense against a tough conference.  Ole Miss would benefit greatly from a few less mistakes by starting QB, Jevan Snead.  Snead has 17 touchdowns on the year, but has also thrown 11 interceptions.  A few of those picks were the difference between a win and a loss for the Rebels.

Mississippi’s defense has been up to the task against the run this season allowing just 3 yards per carry and 103 rushing yards per game.  The pass defense hasn’t fared as well, but as a unit they are only giving up 20 points per game and just under 330 yards per game.  When you consider that the Rebels include games Florida and Alabama in those numbers, they are particularly impressive.

LSU’s offensive numbers make it hard to imagine that the Tigers have been struggling lately.  So far this year they’ve racked up nearly 395 yards of total offense per game and are scoring a healthy 32 points per game.  They’ve been successful running the ball, as well as passing, but have been unable to come up with big plays when they’ve needed them, save for the game against Troy last week where the Tigers reversed a 31-3 deficit.

On Defense the Tiger’s aren’t weak, but they aren’t as strong as they have been in the past, either.  They are giving up 25 points per game at just over 310 yards per game.  The low yards per game are nice, but the points per game is certainly concerning for a team that has ranked among the best in the nation for scoring defense over the past several years.  The bottom line for the defense is that they are good, not great, which has translated into LSU being a good, not great, team this season.  Even with some struggles on defense, LSU is still favored by 3.5 this week.

The LSU Tigers will be tough at home, there’s no doubt about that.  They haven’t looked like a very sharp team as of late, but they still show signs of great talent at times.  Ole Miss has been flying under the radar in the SEC with 4 losses, but they’ve played the best in the SEC close and even beaten one of the best teams in the nation in Florida.  There’s no reason the Rebels can’t play with LSU this week.
