This year Wake Forest was ranked to start the season for the first time and they didn’t waste any time proving that they belonged in the top 25 when they went down to Baylor to crush the Bears 41-13 in their opener. That win moved the Demon Deacons up to no. 20 in the polls, and now they will square off against a Mississippi team that the Houston Nutt era started off on the right foot last week. The Rebels beat Memphis 41-24 in their opener.
Head coach Jim Grobe was a little nervous entering this season since the team had traditionally played the role of underdog, even after winning the ACC title in 2006, but the team wasted no times in putting Grobe’s fear to rest when they got off to a quick 17-0 start before jumping to a 34-6 lead in the third quarter.
Riley Skinner picked up right where he left off a year ago when he completed 72% of his passes as he was 27-for-36, throwing for 220 yards and two scores last week. He got off to an extremely hot start where he completed 12-of-13 to start the game. The win was the 19th for the quarterback, setting the school record.
This week the Deacons will try to extend their good graces in home openers, having won nine of their last 12, which includes six of eight under Grobe. If you want to bet Wake Forest at a -8 spread then head over to JustBet where you will get a 20% signup bonus on your initial deposit.
It could be a battle though as Nutt’s team made a splash for their new head man a week ago, scoring more than 40 points for the first time in nearly five years. That was the kind of game that the administration was looking for after stealing Nutt from Arkansas as he is trying to rejuvenate the fan base and get the Rebels to the top of the SEC.
Jevan Snead wasn’t very accurate in completing only ten of 22 passes, but he did have two touchdowns and 185 yards. Dexter McCluster looked solid running the ball for 64 yards, with an additional 61 yards receiving while scoring a touchdown. McCluster benefited from the new Wild Rebel formation, in which the receiver worked out of the shotgun much like Darren McFadden did in Nutt’s system the last two years at Arkansas. The Rebels have plenty of speed on offense and with that unpredictability of Nutt’s system, this could be a challenge for the Wake defense. Ole Miss is going to have to protect the ball though as the Deacons forced five turnovers against Baylor, which led to three touchdowns.
Nutt is hoping to turn around the Rebels recent woes on the road, as the team has only won one of their last 14 away from home. If you like the Ole Miss line at +8 then bet at JustBet and get a 50% free play on your initial deposit.
