Oregon State v. Oregon Football Odds & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 1, 2009

The Oregon State Beavers take on the Oregon Ducks this Thursday night at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon in the annual Civil War game with a Rose Bowl berth on the line. NCAA football odds makers expect the Ducks to be making the trip to Pasadena, listing Oregon as a 10-point favorite with the total set at 61.

The No. 13 Beavers would like nothing more than to upset the No. 7 Ducks Thursday night to represent the Pac-10 in the Rose Bowl, especially since it was the Ducks that spoiled Oregon State’s Rose Bowl hopes last season.

All the Beavers needed to do was take care of business against rival Oregon and that would have earned a rematch with Penn State in the Rose Bowl, but instead they were embarrassed with a 65-38 defeat. In fact, the 65 points are the most points the Beavers have ever allowed. That loss should provide plenty of motivation for the Beavers this time around.

The Rodgers brothers missed last year’s game, and as a result, Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli stole the show. He passed for 274 yards and three touchdowns as the Ducks racked up 694 yards of offense. Oregon would roll again in the Holiday Bowl with a 42-31 win over Oklahoma State and the Beavers would go on to defeat Pitt 3-0 in the Sun Bowl.

While state bragging rights are always on the line when these two schools face off, this meeting marks the first time in the history of each program that the winner will claim the Pac-10 title and earn a Rose Bowl berth. I must mention that it is nice to see how good Oregon football has been the last two years and it is also nice to see someone else, other than USC, on top of the Pac-10 for a change.

A Rose Bowl opportunity has been a long time coming for the Beavers, which have not played in The Granddaddy of them All” since the 1964 season. Oregon has played in four Rose Bowls with its most recent coming after the 1994 season. The Ducks would have been Rose Bowl bound in 2002 had the bowl not been affiliated with the BCS Championship Game that season.

It is worth noting that the Beavers are an incredible 22-8 against the spread in their last 30 games overall and an impressive13-3 against the number in their last 16 games following a bye week. If you like the Beavers to pull off the upset or keep this one close, bet Oregon State at +10 at Bodog.

It is also worth noting that the Ducks are 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 home games versus a team with a winning road record and 8-1 against the spread in their last 9 games following a bye week. If you like the Ducks to win big at home Thursday, bet Oregon at -10 at Bodog.

And one last thing.  The over could be worth a look as it is 7-0 in the last 7 meetings in this head-to-head matchup.
