2008 Pac-10 Basketball Predictions & Picks
Can anyone dethrone UCLA in the Pac-10? It’s not even close. The Bruins run away with the conference this season. They lost two great players to the NBA draft, but the talent pool is so deep the Bruins probably won’t miss a step. The Bruins are also one of the favorites to make a run at the national title as Sportsbook.com has UCLA listed at +1000 odds to win the NCAA Tournament.
The USC Trojans lost a great scorer in O.J. Mayo, but all indications are the DeMar DeRozan (formerly known as the rapper, Lil’ Romeo) has the potential to be just as dangerous. Head coach Tim Floyd will have the defense in order and USC will be one of the better teams in the Pac-10 this season.
Arizona State has one great player in James Harden. The Sun Devils will only go as far as he can carry them, though, and one player isn’t going to knock off the UCLA Bruins in this conference.
Washington State is a team that snuck up on a lot of people last year and made a run to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. They won’t sneak up on anyone this year, but head coach Tony Bennett will have the Cougars ready to play.
The Arizona Wildcats are a team with a ton of questions this year. Head coach, Lute Olson is out and the ‘Cats lost their top point guard prospect, Brandon Jennings, to one of the European leagues. There’s still plenty of talent in Arizona, but Olson’s leadership will be missed.
The Washington Huskies are a team that’s close to breaking through in the Pac-10, but they aren’t quite there yet. If they’ve found someone to compliment forward Jon Brockman they’ll end up in the top half of the conference, we just don’t know who that someone might be.

Three starters leave from the Oregon Ducks’ squad and all three will be difficult to replace. There are some talented young players ready to fill the void, but they won’t likely be ready to fully recover from their losses this season.
New head coach Mike Montgomery should help California get better the longer he’s with the program, but this team isn’t a contender in the conference or to make the NCAA Tournament this season.
Stanford is coming off of a great 28-8 season, but most of the talent is gone and they simply haven’t had strong enough recruiting to be competitive in the Pac-10 this year.
Oregon State didn’t manage a conference win last season, and while a repeat performance is unlikely, don’t expect many wins from the Beavers this year.
