Carolina Panthers at Green Bay Packers Week 13 NFL Odds & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

Both the Carolina Panthers and the Green Bay Packers will be looking to bounce back following losses in week 12 that surely left backers pulling their hair out. While both teams are very much in the NFC playoff hunt, you would never know it by the way they performed a week ago. Carolina was hit in the mouth with a 45-28 loss at the hands of division rival Atlanta and Green Bay was crushed even worse by the Saints on Monday Night Football. While Carolina is 8-3 on the season, it’s 2-3 road mark has left odds makers doubting the Panthers this week. Carolina is the 3-point underdog with the total set at 43.

A normally stout Carolina defense allowed the most point in head coach John Fox’s seven seasons at the helm. Despite the terrible outcome, the Panthers are still able to take rest in the fact that they remain tied for the NFC South lead and currently own the NFC’s top wild card spot.

The Packers were crushed 51-29 at New Orleans one week after running up the score on the Bears to fall to 5-6 on the season and one-game out of the NFC North top spot. The game marked the most points the Packers had allowed since 1980. In last season’s matchup, the Packers won 31-17 at home, but they know that this Panthers team is a much more formidable opponent. Green Bay may be able to do its most damage on the ground this week. While the Panthers began the season as one of the strongest run defenses in the NFL, they have softened of late. Carolina shut down high-profile backs LaDainian Tomlinson, Matt Forte, Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner early in the season, but over the last three weeks, they’ve yielded 142 yards on the ground to Oakland, 130 to Detroit and 133 to the Falcons. Not being able to stop the run has caused Carolina to drop from second in the NFL scoring defense to seventh after giving up 67 points in the last two games. Packers running back Ryan Grant is having another solid season. He has 837 yards on 216 carries. He gained 88 yards on 20 attempts in last season’s win over Carolina. The Packers will need Aaron Rodgers to bounce back from a subpar performance so that the Panthers cannot flood the box to stop the run. Rodgers threw for 248 yards and two TDs, but also threw three interceptions, which opened up the flood gates against the Saints. If you like Green Bay at home, bet the Packers at -3 at Bookmaker and receive a 20% cash sign up bonus.

Green Bay’s defense has had some problems of its own, allowing Drew Brees to throw for 323 yards and four scores in Week 12. While Green Bay recorded 36 sacks a season ago, it has only amassed 18 in 2008 and that lack of a consistent pass rush is what allowed Brees to pick them apart. Carolina’s offense will be no pushover as it boasts plenty of strong weapons. Running back DeAngelo Williams has broke the century mark in four straight games and wide receiver Steve Smith is coming off a 168 yard performance. QB Jake Delhomme was 21 of 35 for 295 yards and a touchdown. He has thrown for 490 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in two contests against the Packers in his career. If you like 8-3 Carolina catching points, bet the Panthers at +3 at Bookmaker.
