The Janus Report: Free Rose Bowl Pick
The Rose Bowl features two teams each were one upset loss away from a possible BCS Championship game. Penn State lost late in the season to Iowa, effectively knocking them out of the national title race, while USC was defeated earlier in the season by Oregon State and their BCS ranking could not fully recover. The game tonight features two of the most statistically sound teams in the nation and also two of the most successful and celebrated coaches in NCAA history. USC is favored by 9 points against Penn State in the Rose Bowl.
Penn State dominate the majority of its schedule this year. The Nittany Lions racked up 40 points per game, while allowing just 12.4 points to be scored against them. They were one of the most successful teams in the nation at running the ball, averaging 5.3 yards per touch and 211 rushing yards per game. So what is the key for the Nittany Lions? Figuring out a way to solve the most talented defense on the planet. Penn State did not fare well against Iowa’s pressure defense and had similar problems against Ohio State, though they were able to come out on top in that game. As if that weren’t enough for the Lions to deal with, they also have to find a way to stop a USC offense that came on strong in their last 3 games of the season, scoring 45, 38, and 28 points. Joe Paterno’s squad will have their hands full on both sides of the ball.
Pete Carroll’s squad was also impressive on offense this year, racking up 37.5 points per game and 453 yards per game, and their defensive performance is even more impressive than Penn State’s. The Trojans allowed just 7.7 points per game in the regular season and ended up yielding only 206 yards of total offense to their opponents. Penn State’s offense was impressive this year, but the difference here is that USC’s defense played offenses that put up nearly 40 points per game. Against teams like Oregon, Arizona, and Cal the Trojans were able to effectively put their opponents’ offenses on hold.
Look, I’ve been a supporter of Penn state all season, and I’ve made a lot of money by following them, but I have to take the Trojans in the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl has basically become a home game for USC. Statistically these teams are pretty close, but I think that the Trojans have the more talented overall squad.
Predicted Score: USC Trojans 28, Penn State Nittany Lions 14
