Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants Odds
Last year’s Super Bowl Champion, the 11-1 New York Giants host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon. This is a game the Philly desperately needs to win if they want any chance at making the playoffs. Right now, the Eagles are sitting 1 1/2 games behind Dallas and Atlanta, who are currently tied for the Wild Card spot in the NFC. The Giants are just trying to continue to win, for home field advantage throughout the playoffs, and to prove they are still the best team in the NFL (not that many would argue with them there). The Giants are favored by 6.5 over the Eagles and the total is set at 43.
The New York Giants have been extremely successful on offense this year. So far this year, they are putting up a hefty 29.3 point per game and collecting 371 yards of total offense. The Giant’s running game has been spectacular this season, averaging nearly 5 yards per carry and 160 yards per game. Eli Manning isn’t putting up great numbers, but he doesn’t have to, he just needs to run the offense, take care of the ball, and make plays when he has to, which is exactly what he’s done. The pass offense totals just 211 yards per game, but Eli’s 62.1 percent completions show how very efficient this team is on the offensive side of the ball.
The Giants’ defense may be even more impressive than their offense. New York is allowing opposing teams to score just 17 points per game. They are also allowing only 278 yards of total offense, including a rush defense that’s held opposing runners to 84 yards per game. The pass defense has been strong as well, allowing less than 200 yards per game through the air. There aren’t many holes in this defense. They will rush Eagle’s QB Donovan McNabb early and often, you can count on that. And they will likely get to him more than a few times. This is one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. This week the Giants are 6.5 point favorites.
The Eagles are 6-5, but they don’t seem to have many problems with their offensive production. They are scoring 26.6 points per game on 357 yards of total offense. Philly balances the production well, gaining 102 yards per game on the ground and 255 yards per game through the air. The problem for the Eagles has been turnovers, particularly interceptions, where McNabb has already thrown 10 on the year. They absolutely won’t be able to afford many mistakes against the Giants this week if they want any chance at a win.
Over on the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles haven’t been overwhelming, but they haven’t exactly been slacking either. Their rush defense has done well, allowing only 93 yards per game and their secondary has done pretty well against the pass yielding only 193 yards per game. The problem is that this team gives up 20.7 points per game. With their defensive statistics that number could be a lot lower, but turnovers on the offensive side of the ball have left a short field for many opposing offenses. The Eagles are 6.5 point dogs on the road this week.
The Giants have certainly put together an impressive season to date, but they could very well be vulnerable against the Eagles. Philly came back in a big way over the Cardinals on Thanksgiving and they could carry that momentum into a huge victory for their team. An Eagles loss could mean the end of their quest for the post season. The Giants don’t really have a lot to lose, but you can bet they don’t want to add another loss to their resume anytime soon.
