Philadelphia Eagles at San Diego Chargers NFL Betting & Spreads

The 5-3 Philadelphia Eagles take on the 5-3 San Diego Chargers in a key Week 10 non-conference matchup Sunday. Last week, the Eagles saw their two game winning streak come to an end with a 20-16 loss to division rival Dallas. Meanwhile, Philip Rivers was able to orchestrate a scoring drive in the final two minutes to defeat the reeling Giants 21-20. These two teams have not met since the 2005 season when Philly earned a 20-17 victory. The Eagles have won two straight in this head-to-head, but they trail 5-4 in the all-time series. San Diego has played its best football at home in recent years and home field has certainly treated the Chargers well in this matchup.  They have won four straight at home against the Eagles. San Diego has struggled to run the football consistently and it has also struggled on the defensive side of the ball this season. The Chargers must show improvement in both areas against a hungry Eagles squad this week if they hope to come out on top.

The Eagles love to limit what teams can do offensively with their blitz-heavy defensive schemes. Often times a screen play can he a huge gainer against such teams. Wide receiver Vincent Jackson has now caught a touchdown pass in four straight games to make it seven on the season. He is having a monster year, averaging 17.2 yards per catch for 722 yards on the season. Philly will also have to worry about him coming free over the middle when it brings the heat.

The Chargers have won three in a row and I think it no coincidence that both Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips have shown improvement each week during this stretch. These pass rushers have the ability to change games and they will play a huge part in whether the Chargers are able to make it four straight wins. A major key to victory for the Eagles is being able to stretch the field with deep threat DeSean Jackson. Jackson has 26 grabs for 530 yards and four scores on a ridiculous 20.4 yards per catch average. He has also been a big weapon in the return game. In fact, the Eagles are 4-1 when he scores a touchdown, averaging 32.2 points in those games. And they are just 1-2 when he doesn’t find the end zone, averaging only 19.3 points in those games. All six of Jackson’s touchdowns have come on plays of 50 yards or more. A big play by Jackson could mean the difference between a win and a loss for Philly this week.

We here plenty about the Chargers’ Antonio Gates, but Eagles tight end Brent Celek leads NFC tights with 486 receiving yards and he has the potential to expose the San Diego defense this week if they pay too much attention to Jackson.
