Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins NFL Betting Lines & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

eagles skins 102209The 3-2 Philadelphia Eagles take on the 2-4 Washington Redskins at FedEx Field in a Week 7 NFC East Division battle on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. Both teams would like to forget about Week 6. The Eagles lost 13-9 to the lowly Oakland Raiders and the Redskins fell 14-6 to the previously winless Kansas City Chiefs. These teams last met in Week 16 of last season with the Redskins coming out on top 10-3. Washington has won three of the last four meetings and holds a 78-65-5 lead in the all-time series. NFL lines makers have listed the Philadelphia Eagles as a 7-point favorite with the total set at 37.5.

If QB Donovan McNabb has any kind of a game at all for the Eagles last week they wouldn’t have lost to the Raiders. He was just 22 of 46 and was sacked six times. There is no doubt that he was rattled by the pressure, especially after already suffering an injury that forced him to miss time this season. The Philly offensive line needs to keep McNabb upright so he can get back to the form he showed down the stretch last season. The Eagles figure to be tested by Washington’s third ranked pass defense.

One thing that will help McNabb is a more balanced offensive scheme to keep the defense honest. The Eagles called only 14 running plays last week despite a 4.8 yards per carry average. I certainly would have called Brian Westbrook’s number a few more times. He rushed six times for 50 yards (8.3 yards per carry average). With as anemic as Washington’s offense has been this season, the Eagles should be able to get a win as long as their offense shows up this week. It is worth noting that the Redskins are only 1-8 against the spread in their last nine home games. If you expect Philly to bounce back strong with a win and cover this week, bet the Eagles at -7 at Sportsbook.com.

Washington has played well defensively this season, especially at home, where it is allowing only 11.3 points per game, but the offense is going to have to start scoring the football if the team has any chance of making a run to the playoffs. Head coach Jim Zorn has been stripped of his play calling duties and now Sherm Lewis will be leading the offense from the sideline. It will be interesting to see Lewis’ game plan against an aggressive Eagles defense. Washington is doing a decent job on running the football this season, averaging 123 yards per game on 4.2 yards per carry. I expect to see a healthy dose of Clinton Portis to set up the pass. Oakland got a hard-fought 116 yards on the ground against the Eagles last Sunday. It allowed the Raiders to control the clock and seal the win.

Defensively, keep your eyes on rookie Brian Orakpo and veteran DeAngelo Hall. Orakpo leads all rookie with 3.5 sacks and looks to be a Pro Bowler in the making. Hall loves the Monday Night Football stage and has three interceptions in seven career Monday nighters. It is worth noting that the Eagles are only 2-6-1 against the number in the last nine meetings in this series. If you like Washington to continue its dominance over the Eagles, bet the Redskins at +7 at Sportsbook.com.
