Odds to Win the 2011 Preakness Stakes
Here are the odds to win the 2011 Preakness Stakes for Saturday’s probables.
Animal Kingdom: +270 to win the Preakness Stakes – The 20-1 long shot winner of the Kentucky Derby is now the favorite for the second leg of horse racing’s crown jewel. Animal Kingdom has now won back-to-back starts and three of his last four. He has finished no worse than second in all five of his races. His consistency makes him a solid choice for your boxes.
Dialed In: +400 to the Preakness Stakes – The Kentucky Derby favorite, who finished a disappointing eighth, should not be counted out Saturday. We saw the way 2010 Kentucky Derby favorite Lookin At Lucky bounced back from a sixth place finish at Churchill Downs to win the Preakness. Dialed In, who had won three of four races prior to his Derby debacle, could follow in Lookin At Lucky’s footsteps.
Mucho Macho Man: +425 to win the Preakness Stakes – The Kentucky Derby third-place finisher is certainly worth consideration. After all, he has finished in the top three in eight of his nine races. Now that’s the type of consistency I like to see with a horse my hard-earned money is going down on.
Shackleford: +1000 to win the Preakness Stakes – This horse almost pulled off the unthinkable in the Kentucky Derby. He jumped out early and nearly held on for a wire-to-wire win. Shackleford ended up fourth but his early speed should treat him even better at Pimilico with the shorter distance.
Mr. Commons: +1500 to win the Preakness Stakes – This horse took third in the Santa Anita Derby and won its two other starts this year, but history stacks the odds against Mr. Commons. Only six horses that have prepped solely in California have gone on to win the Preakness the last seven decades.
Astrology: +1500 to win the Preakness Stakes – The stars have certainly aligned for this horse, which hasn’t finished off the board in seven career races. It is also worth noting that two of the last four Preakness winners (Curlin, Rachel Alexandra) have come from the same stable (Stonestreet Stables).
Dance City: +1500 to win the Preakness Stakes – This Todd Pletcher horse showed in the Arkansas Derby. However, I find it a bit of a concern that Pletcher didn’t push him toward the Kentucky Derby. Instead, he went with Uncle Mo (scratch) and Stay Thirsty (12th). In other words, Dance City is considered the third-best horse in Pletcher’s stable. That doesn’t do a lot for my confidence.
Sway Away: +1500 to win the Preakness Stakes – This fourth place Arkansas Derby finisher didn’t have quite enough graded stakes earnings to run for the roses. The son of 2005 Preakness Stakes winner Afleet Alex will be looking to make up for it here.
Flashpoint: +1800 to the win the Preakness Stakes – Flashpoint’s 102 Beyer Speed Rating at the Hutcheson Stakes indicates he might be the fastest horse in the field. However, we can’t overlook the fact that he ate Dialed In’s dust in the Florida Derby.
Other hopefuls: Concealed Identity +4000, King Congie +2000, Norman Asbjornson +5000, Midnight Interlude +1800, Isn’t He Perfect +8000.
